Taghmon/Camross
Weekly Press Release, 5 July, 1999
Hurling
Taghmon-Camross lost its last ACHL match to Shelmaliers by 3-11 to 2-8 on Tuesday last. As a result the team is relegated to Division 2B. The early season walk-over to Fethard and early defeats without a full strength team proved costly in the end. The scorers for Taghmon/Camross were Gearóid Kelly (1-1), Robbie O’Callaghan (0-3), Eoin Leacy (1-0), Nicky Cousins, Derek Breen (0-2).
A bad week for the club continued when table-topping Taghmon/Camross lost the Premier B league final to second place Naomh Eanna in Belfield by 1-15 to 2-10. The Gorey men reversed the early season league result with a fine second half display of point taking. Taghmon had the better of a low scoring first half and led by 0-6 to 0-3 at the interval. But early in the second half Gorey scored 5 points before Taghmon registered. But helped by a well taken penalty by Paddy Fitzpatrick and a fortuitous goal by Dermot Breen, Taghmon-Camross had a 4 point lead going into the last 10 minutes. However, with a fine goal and a number of points, Naomh Eanna took a 3 point lead into the last minute. Taghmon’s last attack resulted in a fine shot by Gearóid Kelly narrowly missing the roof of the net and going over the bar. The points were scored by Jason MacLoughlin (5), Michael O’Sullivan (2), Derek Breen, Robbie O’Callaghan, and Gearóid Kelly. The championship starts next weekend with a match against Horeswood in New Ross on Saturday evening. We ask all to attend and support the team. Despite the heartbreak of Sunday, the team has achieved promotion to the top flight for next season, and is well prepared to win its first senior football championship match since 1996.
