Taghmon/Camross GAA Club Notes, 5 June 2000
Hurling
Taghmon/Camross junior hurlers had a mixed week. They had a good win over Kilmore in Taghmon on Tuesday evening last by 1-14 to 1-6, but suffered the first defeat of the league campaign against Davidstown-Courtnacuddy B on Monday evening by 2-10 to 2-8. On Tuesday last the junior team was boosted by the return of Pat O’Callaghan to hurling after his stint as Jesus in the Camross passion play. Pat made many mighty clearances from corner back. At half time the score was 0-8 to 0-3. Scorers for Taghmon/Camross were Jason McLoughlan (1-2), Adrian Morrissey (0-4), Nicky Cousins (0-3), Darren Colfer, Derek Kent, Tom O’Gorman, Derek Breen, and Jonny Waters (0-1 each). For Kilmore JP Downey (1-0), Colm Dillon (0-2), John Whelan (0-2), Nicky Whelan and George Moloney (0-1 each).
On Monday evening the defeat was worse because the weakened Taghmon-Camross lead by 2-5 to 1-4 at half time after playing the better hurling. Tom O’Gorman’s 2 goals were highlights. However in the second half the team ran out of steam. The scorers were Tom O’Gorman (2-0), Nicky Cousins (0-3), Joe Doyle (0-2), Jonny Waters (0-2), Derek Kent (0-1). Winning the remaining fixtures is now essential if the team is to qualify for the final.
Football
The footballers had a good weekend with the juniors defeating Adamstown 4-13 to 0-7 in Taghmon on Saturday evening and the intermediates winning in Fethard on Sunday by 1-7 to 0-8. A disciplined performance on Sunday provided some hope that Taghmon-Camross may survive in the top division. Taghmon/Camross led by 1-5 to 0-4 at half time after having the better of it. With better marksmanship another 2 goals could have been scored. In the second half Taghmon did enough to keep their noses in front aided by wasteful Fethard shooting. Scorers were Bernard O’Gorman (1-1), Jason McLoughlan (0-3), Derek Kent (0-2), and Micheál O’Grady (0-1).
On Saturday Taghmon had a facile win over Adamstown B in the division 2B clash. Taghmon led by 2-7 to 0-4 at half time. The scorers were Ger Power (2-3), Nicky Cousins (1-3 -1 of 2 from penalties), Niall Lacey (1-0), Derek Kent, Mick Carty, Jason Delaney (0-2 each), Ger Kelly (0-1). Victory in the final match of the season should qualify the team for the division final.
Briefs
John Roche was in his briefs again on Sunday night at Catherine Waters 40th birthday party in the community centre. His special show is now being promoted for birthday parties and hen nights. Anyone interested should contact his agent (and cooking oil provider) Derek Kent who now thinks that there is more potential managing a horse with than a dog. The club continues to seek students for work during the summer under a youth employment scheme. Anyone interested should contact Bridie Doyle (053) 34512.
