Hurling

On Saturday evening the first hurling team had a convincing win in its final competitive fixture before the championship outing against Clonee in Oylegate on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 pm.  The final score was 3-21 to 1-3 (HT 0-9 to 0-3).  Several first choice players rested injuries in advance of the big match but the replacements performed admirably.  Particularly impressive were minor forwards Martin Coady (2-3) and Darren Colfer (0-5).  The other scorers were Dave Bury 0-8 (5 frees), Robbie O’Callaghan (1-1), Jimmy Doran (0-2) and Adrian Morrissey (0-2).  The only Clonard score in the second half was a scrappy goal scored after junior B goalkeeper and recent transfer from St Anne’s, Liam Gaynor, made an excellent save of a point.

U-21 Football

On Friday evening the U-21 footballers won the New Ross district title and John Hayes Memorial Trophy with a hard fought win over Horeswood by 2-11 to 1-8 (HT 1-6 to 0-2).  The team was well on top throughout the first half but failed to fully capitalise on the possession.  Horeswood fought back well in the second half and narrowed the gap to 2 points when the Man of the Match, John Kavanagh, scored an excellent lobbed goal to seal victory.  The scorers were Adrian Morrissey (0-7, 5 frees), Eoin Lacey (1-1), John Kavanagh (1-0), Tom Fox, Jonathon Waters and Darren Colfer (0-1 each).  A highlight of the match was the brave challenge made by goalkeeper Shane Fox who was one on one with a Horeswood player at a time when a goal may have turned things.  The team now meets Realt na Mara in the county semi-final.
