Taghmon-Camross back in the big time Skoda Intermediate
football championship final
Taghmon-Camross 1-11, Shelmaliers 0-4: The men from Taghmon-Camross
return to top flight football after a two-year absence, following a
one-sided Skoda Intermediate championship final at Wexford Park on
Saturday last. The game was not expected to end like this. The
Shelmaliers looked jaded, their size was a disadvantage, but most of all
they simply did not possess the footballers that their opponents did. In
fact, it was pretty obvious only minutes into the game that they would
have an enormous task on their hands if they hoped to challenge for this
title. For a start, the Taghmon-Camross half-back line was dominant
throughout the game and, try as they might, Shelmaliers could not breach
it as often as they needed to. Bernard O'Gorman, playing at centre-back,
and David Foley and Michael O'Gorman on the wings, formed an iron-like
shield across the 45-yard line. Furthermore, the Shelmaliers
backs were largely unable for the Taghmon-Camross forwards, particularly
the full-forward line. But once the whistle was sounded for the start
of the match, the Ross District side shot from the traps like
blood-thirsty bullets. Adrian Morrissey had a chance for a goal moments
in, but hit it straight at the Shels 'keeper. David Foley then
kicked a ball down to the corner, where Jason McLoughlin twisted and
turned, before notching the opening score of the game. Immediately,
the contrast in styles was vivid. While the Shelmaliers relied on short,
sharp passing to move the ball upfield, the Taghmon-Camross approach was
more direct. When there was an opportunity to kick the ball into
space for the forwards, they took it. In essence, they played to their
strengths. The Shels attempted to pass their way into scoreable
positions, but time and time again during the game, Taghmon-Camross
blocked and harried, hustled and pressurised and made it very difficult
for them to find space. Michael O'Sullivan kicked another point for
Taghmon-Camross after seven minutes and following a pass from Eoin
O'Gorman, Jason McLoughlin scored his second point of the day.
The other Jason - Delaney - proved that McLoughlin wasn't the only
blue and gold-clad forward who could kick from out the field when he
pointed from 40 yards minutes later to put his side four up. The
Shelmaliers finally registered their first point after 20 minutes when
Derek Walsh struck over a free following some unnecessary fouling by
Taghmon-Camross which resulted in a couple of yellow cards. And then the
lively Chris McGrath showed his class by kicking his side's first score
from play three minutes later. But as Taghmon-Camross took over again,
Derek Breen and McLoughlin kicked more singles in first-half injury time
to restore their four-point lead at 0-6 to 0-2 at the break.
Shelmaliers, to be fair, came out in the second-half and, for really
the only time in the game, threatened to spoil the dominance that
Taghmon-Camross were wielding on the match. But even so, Paddy
Doyle soloed through from the right wing and while a point was surely on,
he went for goal and blasted the ball wide from ten yards. However, after
a McGrath free, Terry Gainfort pointed on the break and pulled their
opponents back to within two points. But that was where the challenge
ended. Two minutes later, Derek Breen robbed Colm Tynan as he was coming
out of defence and passed to Malcolm McLoughlin in space, and the Joseph
Street attacker finished to the net past Keith Rossiter. Game over.
Micheżl O'Grady then kicked a point, followed by another free from
Jason McLoughlin five minutes later. At this stage, the Shelmalier players
were finding it very difficult to get the ball out of their own half and
despite the sending off of Trevor McLoughlin for a second bookable
offence, wing-forward Adrian Morrissey kicked the 12th and final
Taghmon-Camross score three minutes into injury time. Best for the
winners were David Foley, Bernard O'Gorman, Michael O'Gorman and Jason
McLoughlin, while the Shels were well served by Colm Tynan, Emmet O'Leary
and Chris McGrath. The chairman of Wexford County Board, Sheamus
Howlin, presented the cup to winning Taghmon-Camross captain, Adrian
Morrissey, after the game, while Jason McLoughlin received the Skoda man
of the match award. Taghmon-Camross: Michael Carty; Noel Doyle,
