Taghmon/Camross GAA Club Notes, 10 September 2001
The intermediate footballers played their best match in the championship on Friday evening defeating Ferns St Aidan’s in St Patrick’s park by 1-11 to 0-11 in the championship quarterfinal. The first 10 minutes were crucial to the success. Playing against a strong wind Taghmon led with 3 points from David Foley (0-1), Jason McLoughlan (0-4) and Adrian Morrissey (0-2). After that Ferns got a grip in the middle of the field and used the wind advantage to build a lead of 3 points. Then a superb goal by Malcolm McLoughlan (1-2), who had one of his best outings for the intermediate team, levelled matters before Ferns tagged on two late points to lead at the break by 0-9 to 1-4. Taghmon completely dominated possession in the second half but failed to use the wind to best advantage and so only won by 3 points. Sixteen year old Lloyd Colfer (0-2) made his first team debut in place of the absent Bernard O’Gorman and scored two points.
Sadly the junior B’s could not continue the success on Saturday losing the district final to Adamstown 1-12 to 2-2 in Grantstown (HT 1-7 to 2-0). But for the two early goals the scoreboard would look even worse. It was a very poor performance and the scoring prowess of young Lloyd Colfer (who played intermediate) and Darragh Kelly (getting married in Cyprus) was sorely missed. The scorers were Ger Power (1-1), Gearoid Kelly (1-0), Tomas Banville (0-1).
