The African Kora

an introduction

The kora is an African harp-lute found in the Mande regions of Africa; Gambia, Mali, Senegal. The native “griot” kora musicians show tremendous virtuosity on the instrument with beautiful enchanting melodies and fast dexterous passages. This site functions as a directory of all the kora sites I could find on the internet through different search engines and directories. I took an interest in kora music myself through various fusions with Irish traditional music, e.g. The River of Sound project and the AfroCelt Sound System. I hope through the guidance of this devoted directory that you will be able to view what is available to you immediately and gain a deeper knowledge of kora music and its surrounding traditions. I decided to begin my search for kora sites in the UCC music department web site directory (http: //www.ucc.ie/ucc/depts/music/online/) for the chance of getting a good taste of those hard to find quality sites. I find that the most interesting gems can often only be found through links from other pages. The more popular search engines always returned far too many results, even with using the Boolean search techniques. With the advanced searches like that of www.google.com the results were lessened dramatically, but it was still in the 100’s. The deep web did’nt have much else substantial to offer but the metasearch engines gave some extra findings.
