On our first tape of 1997 we have a special interview with John Kearns, one of the men behind the spectacularly successful CD Faith of Our Fathers.  The St. Vincent de Paul offer advice on dealing with debt, and we have a number of reflections on the place of God in the world of work and technology. We also have an interview with Sr Stanislaus Kennedy of Focus Point on the difficult issue of teenage pregnancy.

1.    Crossways:  News in the Church and the World. The Pope has established a new commission to examine instances of anti-Semitism in Catholic history. In our main report we hear from leading Irish Ecumenist, Fr.Michael Hurley about the implications of this move.  The news was read by Alan McGuckian, SJ, and Elaine Comerford.

2.    God and the workplace:  Dolores Leckey is executive director of the secretariat for Family, Laity, Women and Youth at the National Conference of Bishops in Washington DC. She spoke to Marie Stuart, RSM, about how God is present in our workplace.

3.    Therese of Lisieux:  Last September saw the beginning of a year of celebration to mark the centenary of the death of St. Therese of Lisieux. John and Salie Phelan belong to a group called ..... In this interview with Marie Stuart, RSM, they explain the relevance of St Therese in their lives today.

4.    Emigration:  Fr Brian Darcy is a well known broadcaster and journalist. He is also a man who has met Irish emigrants in many parts of the world. At one stage in his own ministry Fr Brian was an emigrant himself. He talked to Alan McGuckian, SJ, about his experience of emigration and of how important a Parish Emigrant Newsletter would be for those far from their own communities.

1.   Faith of Our Fathers:  John Kearns is one of the inspired men who came up with the idea for the most successful CD/Cassette of 1996 in Ireland. Faith of Our Fathers is still enjoying tremendous sales. This month on January 25th/26th Faith of Our Fathers will celebrate it's success with two concerts at the Point Depot, Dublin. In a recent phone interview John Kearns talked to Lorcan Brennan. Lorcan first asked him where did the idea for Faith of Our Fathers come from.

2.    Celtic Beads:  Fr Jim Finn is a priest of the diocese of Ferns (Wexford). For many years he has been interested in Celtic Spirituality. Recently Jim has turned his attention in a fresh direction through the development of a scriptural based beads. The beads can be used for reflection on the presence of God, through the psalms. Lorcan Brennan asked Jim about the scriptural beads. He first asked him if beads were significant in world religions.

3.   Jesuit Film and Video Awards:   The Jesuit Film and Video Awards 1997 have been officially launched. The Irish Jesuits in association with Independent Newspapers, Gael Linn, and IMRO have announced details of a unique film competition for young film makers working on themes of social justice. Andrew Lawless is co-ordinator of the competition. He talked to Lorcan Brennan about the competition and how it had originally started.

4.   Sister Stanislaus:  One of the most serious social problems in Ireland today is the steady rise in the number of children being born to teenage girls.  Some people argue that our social welfare system encourages young single girls to become pregnant with the promise  of children's allowance and preference in relation to housing. Alan McGuckian, SJ, asked Sister Stanislaus Kennedy, director of Focus Ireland for her reaction.

5.   Liam O'Dwyer on dealing with debt:   Over the Christmas period many people will have gone deeply into debt, often with money lenders. Liam O'Dwyer, Dublin based Press Officer of the St Vincent de Paul Society spoke to Alan McGuckian, SJ, about this problem and the help that is available.

6.    Church Music Competition:  The finals of the RTE Church Music competition took place in Dublin on January 5th. Since the competition was launched last summer over 1000 pieces of music were submitted. Twenty-five of these were selected to be performed at last Sunday's final. The overall winner was Fr. John McCann who composed several pieces including a Gloria, a Holy Holy, and a set of Eucharistic acclamations. Fr. John is a priest of Dublin diocese and teaches music and liturgy at Clonliffe College. He spoke to Martin Browne about the qualities needed in good liturgical music.
