Miscellaneous Accumulated Notes
What's in here is stuff that either can't be put into other parts of the
document or I just haven't bother putting in yet. Hold with me.
Dates are given inside square brackets at the beginning. A dash in place of
a date indicates that a date is not relevant. A question mark, the date is
unknown.
Australia
- [-] There are independent Irish colonies in what's called Victoria here.
The inhabitants are mostly a mix of exiled agitants & those who simply
went there looking for a better life. They have a great affinity for the
mother country.
Ireland in the past
- [1155-1922, the famous ocht gcéad bliana] Ireland was a
colony, not a province, of Kemr. The conquest of the island by Pedr II
began in 1155. It lasted over several centuries and involved lots of
peaceful imperialism, like the granting of Kemrese titles to local
chieftins.
- [?] Irish Parliament established. Voting rights in the parliament extend
only to the Hiberno-kemrese. The overall governor is known as An
Leasrí (The Viceroy) and his four lieutenants as Na
Foleasrithe (The Lieutenant Viceroys).
- [-] Thibald Llub Tôn and the United Irishmen
- [?] Domhnall Uí Conaill leads the Guthaíocht na
Lucht Éireannach (Goidelic Enfranchisment) movement to win
the right to representation for all Irishmen in parliament.
- [-] The Bull Laudabiliter that gave Pedr II a free hand with the Irish
corresponds to Henry II's bull of the same name here; similarly,
he gave his eldest son the title of Dom Iwern (which persists as
a minor title of the heir apparent until 1922).
An Saorstát Éireann (The Irish Free State)
- [1922] After Ireland's War of Independence, An Saorstát
Éireann was established in 1922. It became a member of the
Federated Kingdoms with an elected president as Head of
State.
An Aonstát Éireann 1
(The Irish Federation)
- [1952] Isolationist factions, particularly those within the country's
largest party Sinn Fein, push for Ireland to cecede from the
Federated Kingdoms. Massive political reorganisation results in
the foundation of Aontach (The Unity Party) and the dissolution
of Muintir na Daoine (The People's Party, a quasi-communist group
wanting a return to a more traditional form of the Brehon law and a
restoration of ancient Irish culture).
- [1952-1955] Civil War between the the Isolationist Sinn Fein and
the Unionist Aontach groups.
- [late 1955, early 1956] Isolationist factions win, but Unionists gain a
compromise: the establishment of a federation to be called An
Aonstát Éireann, which consists of a four old provinces
& an extra one. The provinces are:
- Connacht (consisting of Connacht and Cavan here)
- Uladh (consisting of Ulster here, but without Cavan)
- Mumhan (same as Munster here)
- Laidhin (corresponds to Dublin, the east of Meath, Wicklow and part of
Wexford here)
- An Mhí (consists of what remains)
Federalisation involved the old province of Laidhin to be split into the
provinces of An Mhí in the west and Laidhin in the
east.
- [1956-1988] During the Isolationist Period, Irish industry was modernised
drastically. By 1990, Ireland was one of the world's most developed
nations, right up there with the Federated Kingdoms and
Dalmatia
- [-] There are elements within An Aonstát Éireann who
support seperatist groups in Dûnein, mostly in the hope of breaking
up the FK.
- [1956] The Nobility systems existing up until the establishment of An
Aonstát Éireann were abolished upon its foundation.
Those who had titles were allowed to hold onto them, but any special right
afforded to them were revoked.
- [-] The most noticable characteristic of the national psyche is a cultural,
economic & socio-political inferiority complex. This has the
unfortunate habit of leading to strained relations with other states. The
Irish are forever cursed with a feeling of needing to prove themselves as
a nation. This is what lead to the isolationist movement and the great
national push towards modernisation.
- [-] The state's law system is based on Brehon law. An aspect that marks it
out from that of other country's systems is its wholly independent
judiciary. Civil government cannot interfere with the judicial system.
- [-] The Federal Government is a hangover of sorts from the days of An
Saorstát. The deal establishing An Aonstát gave partial
autonomy to each of the provinces, but the central government
remained. The provincial assemblies (Na Dálaí
Cúigí) are each called Dail. The federal assembly
is called An tOireachtas2.
- [-] The Chos Nustoer aren't very popular in Ireland.
- [-] Relations are quite good with other states such as Dalmatia and the
SLC at the moment.
Footnotes
- I coined the word "Aonstát" because I couldn't
recall what the word for "Federation" was in Irish. It translates as
"Union-State", a pretty good descripion for what it is in this case anyway.
It's a nicer word than either "Cónaidhm" or "Stát
Cónaidhme", I think.
- I had been using the word Ard-dháil up
until recently (15-Oct-2001).
