Visit to Holland
Comenius Project
For the past 4 years St Canice's School has been involved in a project with two schools in The Netherlands and one school in Poland. We have had many visits from our European colleagues and we have been to their schools to see their system of education. The children in St Canice's have been in contact with their peers in Poland and in The Netherlands. Last June six Dutch children sang in the National Children's Choir concert in the National Concert Hall with our children

In October last five teachers from a local school travelled to the Netherlands in a link-up with local Dutch schools and schools from Poland. St Canice's Co Ed on the Granges Road is participating in a European funded project with the co-operation of Leargas, the governmental cultural exchange agency. The five teachers attended a series of meetings in Enschede, in the eastern part of Holland to launch the project. Over the next 3 years St Canice's School will link up with their European partners to share pupils work, curriculum projects, pen pal letters e-mail etc. Teachers from Holland and Poland will visit St Canice's over that period to see Irish education in action. The aim of the project is to broaden pupils' perspective of the European Union and to facilitate an exchange of ideas and attitudes among teachers. In Enschede last week, the five Irish teachers visited 2 Dutch schools and were surprised to find how much the teachers there knew about Ireland and the Irish. Irish music was played at several of the gatherings and there was even a Dutch group singing traditional Irish songs. The love of Ireland and all things Irish was very evident. The teachers also found much in common with their Polish colleagues. Plans were laid for projects over the next 3 years and everyone in St Canice's is looking forward to the experience.

Letters to Holland and to Poland

Children in fifth and sixth class sent letters and photographs of themselves over the Internet to Holland and Poland last week. The letters were accounts of the children and were written in simple English for our friends to understand. The photographs were taken with the school digital camera and prepared for the internet by the teachers on the school computer in the resource room. We are looking forward to receiveing replies in the near future

The children in the sixth classes visited the National Gallery in March 2003 as part of the project to view woks of Irish and Dutch painters
