What was going on? It was then that I remembered that I phoned Uncle Jim a short while ago. I couldn't quite make out what he was saying, but it sounded serious. I chewed at the tape. I was so worried. Would we ever see daylight again? The tape finally slipped off and I was able to breathe properly again.
"HELP!"I screeched, at the top of my voice," HELP US!"
There was a scraping sound and a patch of light was brightening the cave.
"Is anybody in there?"
The voice was very clear; it just had to be him.
A car's engine started.
"Get that cop!"
I heard another engine.
Ten minutes passed. Nothing happened.
A little while later tyres squelched through wet sand.
Suddenly Uncle Jim appeared in front of me.
"Did you catch him? "I asked, half afraid of hearing the word 'no'.
"Just barely," came the reply. "I should thank a dog! But before I tell you the story I'll untie Jade and yourself."
"That's better!" exclaimed Jade, stretching out her arms. "Is the Sergeant in your car?"
"Yes."
As we climbed out of the cave I caught a glimpse of Sergeant Maguire's face. He had the biggest pout you ever saw!
More sirens were heard in the distance. And as they took Maguire away, a big grin spread across my face.
