Brushstrokes

In yet another depiction of water lilies he creates a very interesting composition by his use of brush strokes. The background water is treated with bold vertical strokes and this is broken up by the use of short flat horizontal strokes for the foliage.

Once again the colours range from mauve to green with touches of red to highlight the waterlilies. The tones he uses create a soft gentle pictorial effect. In some of these pictures painted with very light tone we see his movement towards almost abstraction. He creates a sense of diffused light,of swirling mist by the use of many different colours. The colour has very little to do with the subject matter. We see how he made a picturesque painting using only harmonious tones of colour.

In the final analysis the question is how does Monet fit into the history of art. He opened up a new path towards new abstract expressionism and freedom, and many generations of artists up to the present time have been influenced by him.
