3.3 Private Transport

Although the use of public transport has to be promoted, we have to bear in mind that some people have mobility problems which oblige them to use a private vehicle. So, it is necessary that:

  • Pedestrian areas should be designed in which it is possible to talk, rest or play, but it should not be forgotten that it is sometimes essential for vehicles to enter, such as, ambulances or vans which have to load/ unload, or those of residents with mobility problems. Protective elements should, therefore, be retractable.

  • Surface-level parking spaces should be reserved for people with reduced mobility throughout the city.

  • Users with mobility problems who hold special parking permission should be well-informed about their rights, but also about their duties (parking properly so as not to create risks for other people).

  • Car rental companies should offer adapted cars for drivers with disabilities.

  • To guarantee the complete autonomy of drivers with disabilities, petrol stations should be attended by personnel instead of being solely self service. In addition, S.O.S. points on highways should enable deaf drivers to use them.
