ULEAD GIF ANIMATOR AND PSP

This Tutorial will show how easy and convenient it is
to animate your PSP work using Ulead GIF Animator

I have tried to write this Tutorial with PSP beginners in mind, I have included
lots of screen shots, and have gone into much detail to explain the various steps

For demonstration purposes we will be working through my Kaleidoscopic Orb PSP file

PSP PART

This part will show you how to:-

(A) Increase your Canvas size and Copy/Paste an Image into Selection

(B) Link your Layers so you can accurately move them all together

STEP (1)

Download the Kaleidoscopic Orb PSP file here

(This file was saved in PSP7 so will therefore open in all higher versions)

STEP (2)

Open the Downloaded Kaleidoscopic Orb file with your version of PSP
your Document and Layer Palette, should look like this (Shown in PSP X)

STEP (3)

We will use this 500x500 pixel image for our Background Layer,
Right Click on it, and in the drop-down menu click Copy

NEXT

In your PSP Program go to the Overhead Bar, then go to Image and in its drop-down menu, click
Canvas Size, when its pop-up box appears change the Canvas size to 500x500 pixels, click OK

NEXT

Go to your Layer Palette, and select the Temp Layer, click on it and rename it
Background Layer, then tap down your "Delete Key" to remove the white square from it

NEXT

Hold down your ctrl Key and tap down your "A" Key, this will
create a Selection around your Document (Marching Ants)

NEXT

With the Background Layer selected, go to the Overhead Bar, then
go to Edit, and in its drop-down menu, click Paste Into Selection

NEXT

Hold down your ctrl Key and tap down your "D" Key, this
will deselect your Document (stop the Marching Ants)

With your Layer Palette arranged like this

Your Document will now look like this

STEP (4)

We now need to position the Kaleidoscopic Orb, so go to your Layer Palette, and make
all Layers visible by clicking their Eye Icons, then select the Overlay Disc Layer

NEXT

Still on your Layer Palette, and the Overlay Disc Layer selected, click the Layer Link
Toggle, then in turn select and apply this Layer Link toggle step to the 8 Rasher Layers

Your Layer Palette should now look like this

Go to the Toolbar and select the Move Tool, then go to your Document, holding down the
Shift Key and your Mouse, drag the Kaleidoscopic Orb to a position your happy with

Your Document should now look like this

STEP(5)

Go to the Overhead Bar, then go to Image and in its drop-down menu, click Resize, when
its Pop-Up box appears change the Width and Height settings to 400 pixels, then click OK

NEXT

Go to the Overhead Bar, then go to File and in its drop-down menu,
click "Save Copy As" when its Pop-Up box appears scroll down the
"Save as type" menu and select PSP Animation Shop (psp) then Click OK

(Saving it as a PSP Animation File, will ensure it will open in Ulead GIF Animator)

We have now finished with the PSP part so you can now close your PSP program down

ULEAD ANIMATOR PART

If you do not have Ulead GIF Animator, you can download
a fully functional 15 day trial program here

STEP (6)

Open up Ulead GIF Animator, if this Startup Wizard appears, click Close as it is not required

Go to the Overhead Bar, then go to File and in its drop-down menu, click Open Image

NEXT

When its Pop-Up box appears, find and select the Kaleidoscopic Orb, click Open

STEP (7)

Your Ulead Gif Animator work space should look like this

This Object Manager Panel will be on the Right

This Frame Panel will be at the bottom

NEXT

Go to the Frame Panel, and click the Add Frame Button
7 times, your Frame Panel should now look like this

Select Frame 1, on the Frame Panel

NEXT

Go to your Object Manager Panel, and arrange it like this

Set the other 7 frames like this

On the Frame Panel, Select Frame 2,

On the Object Manager Panel arrange the Eye Icons like this,

Background, ON -- Rasher 2, ON -- Overlay Disc, ON -- Others, OFF

On the Frame Panel, Select Frame 3,

On the Object Manager Panel arrange the Eye Icons like this,

Background, ON -- Rasher 3, ON -- Overlay Disc, ON -- Others, OFF

On the Frame Panel, Select Frame 4,

On the Object Manager Panel arrange the Eye Icons like this,

Background, ON -- Rasher 4, ON -- Overlay Disc, ON -- Others, OFF

On the Frame Panel, Select Frame 5,

On the Object Manager Panel arrange the Eye Icons like this,

On the Frame Panel, Select Frame 6,

On the Object Manager Panel arrange the Eye Icons like this,

On the Frame Panel, Select Frame 7,

On the Object Manager Panel arrange the Eye Icons like this,

On the Frame Panel, Select Frame 8,

On the Object Manager Panel arrange the Eye Icons like this,

Background, ON -- Rasher 8, ON -- Overlay Disc, ON -- Others, OFF

STEP (8)

We will now check our Animation, so go to the Frame Panel, and click the "Play Animation" Button

This is the result

STEP (9)

On the Frame Panel, the Default Delay time is set for 0.1 (1/100 sec)
our animation result looks OK at this speed, however if you wanted
to speed up, or slow down your Animation, this is how to do it

Select Frame 1, then hold down your "Shift Key" and select
Frame 8, your Frame Panel will go to Blue like this

NEXT

Right Click anywhere on the Frame Panel, and this Pop-Up box will appear

Click on Frame Properties, which will then make this Pop-Up box appear

Change the Delay to your requirements, and click OK, as we have highlighted (selected) all
the Frames on the Frame Panel, the new delay will automatically be applied to all Frames

STEP (10)

All we need to do now is save our animation as a gif file, in order to achieve a reduction in
the file size and yet still maintain a good quality result, we will use the Optimization Wizard

On the Overhead Bar go to File and in its Drop-Down Menu click Optimization Wizard

When the below Pop-Up box appears check that you have these settings

Click Next which in turn will bring up the below Pop-Up box,
change the Number of Colors to 100 and the Dither Value to 50

Click Next which in turn will make the below Pop-Up
box appear, check to see you have the same settings

Click Next, which in turn will make the below Pop-up box appear

Click Finish which in turn will make the below "Save As" Pop-up box appear

Click the "Save As" button, name and save your Animation as a gif file

That's it we are finished I hope this Tutorial proves
