Once again this tape covers a wide variety of issues. The Irish Bishops' Conference have launched a new initiative in combatting the drugs problem, we hear from Bishop Eamonn Walsh. We cover Pentecost and the Holy Spirit, and upcoming events such as the Great Irish Famine Event, and Bealtaine, which is being organised by Age and Opportunity. With the anniversary of St. Columcille approaching, we have the first of a number of interviews. C.O.R.I's Part Time Job Opportunity Programme is discussed by Minister Richard Bruton, and Bertie Ahern talks to us about Part Time Job Opportunities on our islands. All this and more.

1. Crossways: News in the Church and the World. In our main report this week we hear from the East Timorese Nobel Peace Laureate, Dr. Josè Ramos-Horta. We hear about the current situation in East Timor and the purpose of Dr. Ramos-Horta's visit to Ireland at this time. The news was read by Alan McGuckian, SJ, and Elaine Comerford.

2. Breaking the Silence: The Irish Bishops' Conference have launched a new initiative called "Breaking the Silence". The function of the initiative is to complement and support the work being done by the many statutory and voluntary agencies in the prevention and teatment of drug abuse. The Bishops urge Church members to become active in seeking solutions to the drug problem in four ways: by encouraging those affected to seek help and not to deny the problem; by helping people to know more about the nature and effects of drug abuse and addiction; by trying to understand and help those hurt by drugs; and by encouraging every family to be active as a community to help young people withstand the lure of drugs. Elaine Comerford asked Rev. Eamonn Walsh, Auxiliary Bishop of Dublin, how he hopes the initiative will work.

3. Pentecost and the Holy Spirit: As the feast of Pentecost approaches Marie Stuart, RSM, talked Micheal Hurley, CC, about the Holy Spirit in his own life and in the daily life of the Church. Michael is curate in Cabra, Dublin.

4. Bealtaine: The Bealtaine Festival is Ireland's premier arts festival for and by older people. Last year, over 50 groups and institutions participated in the nationwide festival, and one Cork group even took over the Cork to Dublin train telling stories along the way. Bealtaine, which is running throughout the month of May is the brain child of an organisation called Age & Opportunity. Maria O'Loughlin asked their press officer John Cullen to explain why it was set up in the first place.

5. Why the Church?: 'Why the Church' was the title of the keynote address at the recent annual conference of Pobal in Dublin. The address was given by Fr. Noel Barber, SJ, editor of the journal Studies. In it he suggested that the Roman Catholic Church often concentrated too heavily on safeguarding the institution of the Church and stating detailed points of doctrine, instead of preaching the core of the message of Jesus Christ. He spoke to Martin Browne.

6. St. Columcille: The 1,500th anniversary of the death of St. Columcille or Columba is being celebrated this year. His feast day is coming up in June. The Rev. Marcus Losack, who is based at Glendalough is a great admirer of St. Columba. Alan McGuckian, SJ, interviewed him.

1. Teach Me, O God: A new recording of liturgical music has just been issued by the Mater Dei Institute of Education in Dublin. Called Teach Me, O God, most of the music on the recording is composed by the staff or past students of the Institute. All of the music is performed by the Mater Dei Chorale, conducted by Sr. Anne Murphy. Martin Browne spoke to two members of the Chorale, Ailish Walsh from Castleisland, County Kerry and Maria Moynihan from Ballaghadereen, County Roscommon.

2. Parish Cell System Seminar: The Parish Cell System of Evangelisation has been in place in a number of parishes around Ireland for up to seven years. On Friday and Saturday May 16th and 17th the Fifth National Cell Seminar will take place in Ballinteer in Dublin. The theme for the weekend is 'Disciples for 2000’ and the seminar is open to anybody who is interested. Eithne Carr talked to Marie Stuart, RSM, about being part of the Cell System and Michael Hurley, CC, talked about the theme of the conference.

3. The Great Irish Famine Event: Gorta, the official Freedom from Hunger Council of Ireland, and the Big Issues have joined together to organize the Great Irish Famine Event. They are organising walks at community level throughout Ireland on 5th May, to commemorate the Great Irish Famine. It is hoped that funds raised will help Gorta in their fight against global famine, and the Big Issues in their efforts to facilitate self help programmes for the homeless and long-term unemployed in Ireland. Ann Kennedy asked Geraldine Stokes, Development Officer with Gorta, what exactly this event is all about?

4. Leadership: The National Conference of Priests of Ireland recently held their April seminar which was titled `The Ministry of Leadership’. Sr. Una O’Neill, RSC, got a warm and enthusiastic response to her keynote address and when Marie Stuart, RSM, interviewed she started by asking her how she saw leadership. Una taught Theology at Mater Dei Institute for a number of years and is Congregational Leader of the Irish Sisters of Charity.

5. Part Time Job Opportunities Programme Mainstreamed: The Minister for Enterprise and Employment, Mr. Richard Bruton recently announced the mainstreaming of the CORI piloted Part Time Job Opportunities Programme. In this interview Marie Stuart, RSM, talked to the Minister about his reasons for mainstreaming the programme and the question of a two tier society developing during this period of economic boom

6. An Opportunity for the Islands: Over the past three years the Part Time Job Opportunities Programme created 72 jobs for 14 organisations on 12 offshore islands. Mr Bertie Ahern recently launched their report - An Opportunity for the Islands. As Minister for Finance Mr Ahern allocated 1000 places to the Part Time Job Opportunities pilot programme in 1994, Marie Stuart, RSM, talked to him about his current attitude to the programme.
