Lions Year 2006/207

Another successful year for 'The Taste of Howth' fund raising. A melody of gourmet food from 15 Howth restaurants was served to over 300 guests, each restaurant its own favoured classical dish.  In the process some Euro 28,000 was realised for Lions charity including the Royal National Lifeboat of Ireland (RNLI).

Another successful fund raising event which took place on November 23 raised some Euro 7,000. Apart from being successful financially, the occasion was also very enjoyable, the contestants pitting their knowledge skills against fellow competitors and of course the ingenuity of the Quiz Master.

A very enjoyable and successful Concert evening was held in the Marine Hotel during March organized by Paddy Garland. Some Euro 5,300 was raised for charity. This was Paddy's last fund raising venture as he retired as an active member of Lions on his 83rd year after 35 years in the club. Paddy has been made an Honorary Member of Howth Sutton Lions Club.

Howth Festival Golf Ball race (1000 golf balls released simultaneously) -(a) Leading golf balls arriving at finishing line; and if you look closely you can see in (b) the Golf balls on the move down Howth Hill. Well done to Brendan O'Brien and his marshals for this novel Lions fund raising event featured in Howth Festival Programme.  As a result over €10,000 was collected for cancer research and other Lions charities.

Lions John Culhane, Brendan Clancy and Paddy Garland with Melvin Jones Fellowships for their commitment to Lions over many decades. Also in the picture (right hand side) is Gerald Langford, outgoing District Governor of the Lions Clubs in Ireland.

It is traditional each year to invite Clubs throughout the Lions District of Ireland (105-I) to contribute to a charity or good cause nominated by the District Governor's spouse. In the Lion year 2006/07, Gerald Langford from the Howth Sutton Lions Club was District Governor. Gerald's spouse Anne nominated Make a Wish Foundation as her choice and the clubs throughout Ireland responded magnificently to the amount of EU 14,600.  Over can be seen Anne Langford with her husband PDG Gerald presenting Freddie O'Neill, General Manager of the Make a Wish Foundation in Ireland with a cheque for the above amount - well done Anne for a wonderful result.
