Ontechnical issues, what's the best way to take a penalty.

1. Take a run at it, throw it out in fornt of you five yards and hit in on the run at the 14 yard line. OK, we're not all DJ'd so we'd probbaly miss it and look like an eejit.

2. Stand over it, aim for the guy who looks the most unsure of himself, and blast it at him.

3. Try bounce it off the ground five yards out.

4. Just concentrate on hitting it as hard as possible.

As for goalies, they all seem to stand out from the goal line to have chance of getting across to shots without hitting off the other defenders. This didn't work too well for Davey v Wa'ford.

U dont have to miss a penalty to look like an eejit, tool.

On taking the penalty, I'd go for a combination of 3 and 4. Bouncing it 2 to 3 yards out. Dont lift it too high, strike with a low trajectory so it doesn't bounce too high and hit the body.
Alternatively, lifting the ball fairly high, aiming for the roof of the net. The thinking behind this one is that all that they can stop the sliothar with up there are the hurleys i.e., no bodies to stop the ball. If you mis**** you have the consolation of a point!

As for Goalies standing in front of the backs, I think thats a disaster. Best method for this is, I think, for everyone to stand tall, edging forward in a line, making the goals look smaller, then just as the ball is about to be struck everyone takes up their preferred ready position. Some crouch down, some stand tall, etc.

If I was able to take a penalty, I'd first look for the weak spot in the wall - ie a gap between the players where either none or one hurley is pointed. Try to take one or two steps forward, then flake it at the gap at shoulder height.

More good news for Limerick, I think, 3. Ye'll hope he goes on to be another Paul Kelly. 'Tis extraordinary out of a young lad of 16/17 to be taking the frees for an A-I U21 outfit. What will he like by the time he's 20?

Where does Kirby go to school, by the way? And this Hayes lad?

Another great hurling topic, PMT. Fair play. Perhaps it deserves a thread of its own?

As for taking penalties: a lot depends on whether it's been raining or not. Carey's penalty just before halftime in the '92 Final
showed the potent possibilities of a greasy turf.

Equally, with a rock-hard square in July or August, going low is a good option. I remember Ger Fennelly scoring some hummers in Thomastown in such fashion.

Christy Ring's take on penalties was that you have to strike the ball 'on the up': that's to say, you have to strike the sliothar as it's has started to descend from the highest point of where it went up in the air from the pick with the hurl. If you decide to go low -- wet day or scorching day -- making sure you still strike 'on the up' requires considerable technical skill.

Any more thoughts? What would people consider the finest penalty they ever saw struck? And the worst one?

Paul Flynn versus Clare in '98 Munster Final. Bullet into the top corner. Cracker.

Are you mixing the Limerick Mark Foley up with the Cork Mark Foley. The "donkey" that scored 2-7 in a Munster Final. From play.

Better again because it was a 21 yard free into a packed goal - not a penalty.

Worst scored penalty, Tom "Sheepshead" Casey against KK NHL s-f replay 1982. Completely missed the lift then mi**** the ground shot and the ball still bobbled to the back of the net.

Yes he is...

Mark Foley of Limerick would only have been around 9 years old back in 1984.

Yes, I thougth the great no. 7 couldn't be the lad in question. I'd forgotten about the 6'5" man. Then again, most people, like John Kennedy, do try to forget him...

Cheers.

Yep, tis the Cork Mark Foley I was referring too. He was as big as a minor as when he played senior. Went on to study dentistry in Cork. Foley and John Herbert of UCD (Turlough Herbert's older brother) used to bate the sugar out of each other (well, no, Herbert used to bate Foley black and blue) in the Fitzgibbon for few years in the late eighties.

That's a good one. I would stand with bas to my right. If I stood to the right of a guy with the bas to his left, it would mean there would be a split second lost getting the hurleys round to cover a shot between us. A further plus would be both would put each other off going for the same ball.

I suppose a goalie should ensure that the man to his left holds left and the guy to his right holds right (to cover the posts) and the goalie holds the centre either side of the two defenders. For that the goalie should point his hurley straight in front of himself to be able to choose either side.

At club level, aim the penalty for the heads.

I see we have moved to another set of East Limerick hard men that I played against. John and Kevin Herbert were two dangerous men on a hurling field.

Didn't know Kevin, there was Diarmuid and Gearoid as well. Turlough was the best of the brothers. Hard men alright. I marked both of them and they both bate the sugar out of me. I still owe John a good thump. Dirty fecker off the ball. Still, off the field he wasn't such a bad fella.

Yeah Kirby is a Colmans lad alright. I think last year was his first and he took ove the free-taking duties from shaughs. A friend of mine was teaching down there and he was raving about Shaughs but when he saw Kirby he said he was better. I saw him play against Athlacca in the Inter quarter final last year as a 16 yr old. The guy that was marking him was giving him awful grief but he took no notice and gave him a lesson. I haven't seen too much of Shaughs but Kirby is some talent. One for the future...

How bout this then ??

I'm RHOT & strike from the left (No. 2), but on those rare occasions where I do actually manage to connect properly from my right side I strike the ball much better ... if that makes sense !!

And though I'm right handed, to make matters worse, I'm left footed but the same again applies, when I do actually connect properly with my right foot it's a better strike, but agin thats a rarity !!

I may give it up alltogether !!
