7th April; Abbeyfeale Utd drew 2-2 with Glin Rovers in the premier league on Sunday. Thomas Fitzgerald scored both goals for Abbeyfeale. In division 2, Abbeyfeale Utd B drew 1-1 with Newcastlest B. Joe Brouder was the Abbeyfeale scorer.
30th April; Most games in the Desmond League were cancelled this weekend due to the bad weather.
23rd April; Abbeyfeale Utd were beaten 1-0 by Cork City at Riverside Park on Sunday in the quarter-final of the FAI U/17 cup. Before a large and vocal home crowd The Fealesiders gave a battling performance against a vastly more experienced Cork team and were desperately unlucky to concede an o.g after 39 minutes. They created a few good scoring chances in the second half but were unable to convert them. Man of the Match for Abbeyfeale was their influential sweeper, Thomas Cahill. Abbeyfeale Utd U/16`s travel to Dundalk next Sunday to play Seatown in the fourth round of the National Cup. The game kicks-off at 3pm. The winners here face a long trekk to Donegal in the next round. Abbeyfeale Utd A were defeated 4-1 by Knockaderry in the Desmond Cup on Sunday. Abbeyfeale Utd B defeated Newcastlewest 4-3 in a league division 2 game on Sunday morning.
16th April; Abbeyfeale Utd drew 3-3 with Killeaney in the league on Sunday. The Fealesiders conceded a goal from the kick-off before racing into a 3-1 lead with goals from Joe Kelliher (2) and Tom Collins. However they were pegged back by Killeaney in the second half and were eventually forced to settle for a share of the points. Abbeyfeale Utd B drew 2-2 with Villa Rovers. Prolific striker, Pa Enright, scored both goals for Abbeyfeale.
Abbeyfeale Utd play Cork City in the quarter-final of the U/17 National Cup at Riverside Park on next Saturday aftrnoon at 2.30 pm. In the U/16 National Cup, Abbeyfeale Utd are drawn away to the winners of Seatown (Dundalk) and Ashbourne (Meath) .
26th March ;Trailing by one goal to nil at half time and down to ten men, Abbeyfeale Utd staged a remarkable second half recovery to beat Killeaney 5-1 in the premiership at Riverside Park on Sunday morning. Tom Collins started the fight back with an equalizing goal early in the second half. Paul Siucrue gave The Fealesiders the lead after twenty minutes. Joe Kelliher then scored a fine hat-trick to give Abbeyfeale an unexpected but fully deserved victory. Abbeyfeale Utd B defeated Rockhill Rovers by 2 goals to nil. The Republic of Ireland defeated Cyprus 4-nil in a World Cup qualifier on Saturday. Roy Keane (2) Garry Kelly and Ian Harte were the Irish scorers. They play Andorra on Wednesday night.
26th Feb; In the Desmond Cup Abbeyfeale Utd defeated Old Mill by 2 goals to nil. Glantine defeated Abbeyfeale Utd B by 1 goal to nil.
19th Feb; Abbeyfeale Utd`s slim hopes of retaining their premiership title all but disappeared on Sunday when they were defeated 2-0 by Glin Rovers. The Fealesiders conceded two early goals and, although they pressed forward well in the second half and created goal-scoring chances, they failed to breech a stubborn home defence. Dermot Prendiville scored the goals for Abbeyfeale Utd B when they drew 2-2 with Ballygran on Sunday morning., the first from the penalty spot, and the second a hotly disputed equalizer in the closing minutes. Abbeyfeale Youths defeated Foynes by 3 goals to 2.
12th Feb; Abbeyfeale Utd had a comprehensive 3-0 win away to Pallaskenry on Sunday. Joe Kelliher (2) and Paul Siucrue were the Abbeyfeale scorers. Abbeyfeale Utd B defeated Athea 1-0 on Sunday morning. Pa Enright was the goalscorer here. Abbeyfeale Utd U/16s defeated Ballynanty 4-2 in the National Cup competition 4th round. The Abbeyfeale scorers were D Behan (2) P Doherty and J Kelliher. Denis Behan is in the U/16 Republic of Ireland squad to play Norway on this Wednesday night in Drogheda.
5th Feb; Abbeyfeale Utd B defeated Ballyagran by 3 goals to 2 on Sunday morning. Pa Enright opened the scoring for Abbeyfeale in the first quarter. Pat Sullivan converted a penalty and Pat Smith grabbed a late third. Meanwhile, Abbeyfeale Utd have reached the quarter-finals of a national competition for the first time in the club`s history with victory over Newcastle Rovers in the last 16 of the FAI U/17 cup. They are now one of just eight teams from the whole country left in this competition and eagerly await the draw for the next round.
29th Jan; Abbeyfeale United drew 1-1 with Broadford United at Riverside Park on Sunday morning. The Fealesiders took the lead when Paul Siucrue`s floated corner was headed home by PJ Murphy, midway through the first half. Broadford levelled matters before the break. Both teams had chances of claiming full points in the second half, but poor finishing resulted in the spoils being shared. Abbeyfeale Utd B were beaten 3-1 by Ballysteen.
22nd Jan; Abbeyfeale collected their first league points of the season with a 4-1 win over Foynes on Sunday. Denis Behan gave The Fealesiders the lead after twenty minutes. Foynes then gifted Abbeyfeale a second goal before pulling one back before half time. However, two good second-half strikes from Stephen Murphy gave The home side an emphatic victory. We can now expect to see Abbeyfeale making their way steadily up the table, and despite a disasterous start to the league, they may yet throw down a determined challenge to retain the title that they won for the first time last year. Abbeyfeale Utd B drew 1-1 with Breska Rovers.
15th Jan. Defending champions, Abbeyfeale Utd remain pointless at the bottom of the Premier Division following a 2-1 home defeat against Newcastlewest on Sunday morning. Fielding a near full-strength team, The Fealesiders created several early chances but failed to find the target. The visitors took the lead with a good strike, midway through the first half. Joe Kelliher equalized with an opportunist goal to leave it 1-1 at half time. Abbeyfeale again created several good chances at the beginning of the second half and were made to pay for some costly misses when Newcastlewest took the lead with twenty minutes remaining. The closing stages were played at a fast and furious pace, with both sides carving out chances. Abbeyfeale had two justifiable penalty appeals turned down. International under age star, Denis Behan, saw his pile-driver from thirty yards scream inches over the bar. He then missed with a close-in header when it seemed easier to score. At the other end, Abbeyfeale goalkeeper Noel Healy brought off two spectacular saves when his defence exposed him twice to one-on-one situations with the opposing centre half. Abbeyfeale have now played three matches, losing all three and conceding 8 goals while scoring just two. The Fealesiders are notoriously slow starters in the league and, while it is doubtful if they can retain their title, they are still capable of finishing in the top half of the table. Meanwhile, Abbeyfeale Utd B drew 1-1 away to Breska Rovers in division 2. Pa Enright gave Abbeyfeale the lead after thirty minutes, but Breska equalized from the penalty spot five minutes later.
Abbeyfeale Utd b defeated Broadford B away in the league by 4 goals to two on Sunday.
Abbeyfeale Utd made their exit from the Munster Senior Cup when beaten 2-1 by senior Cork side, Everton, (Denis Irvine`s old club) at Riverside Park this afternoon. The Fealesiders took a shock lead midway through the first half when Republic of Ireland Youth International, Brian Behan, found the net following a good build up. However, the visitors equalized from the penalty spot just two minutes later. Both sides continued to create chances, but it remained 1-1 after 90 minutes. Everton took the lead in the first period of extra time following a mix-up in defence. Abbeyfeale attacked strongly in the closing minutes and had the ball in the net, but it was disallowed for a dubious infringement. Final score; Abbeyfeale Utd 1. Everton 2 .
3rd Dec; Abbeyfeale Utd caused a major upset when defeating Cobh Wanderers on penalties in the Munster Senior Cup. Cobh, fielding four former league of Ireland players, led by one goal to nil at half time. Abbeyfeale introduced Irish U/16 player, Denis Behan, after half time and he scored the equalizer. Ten minutes from time, Abbeyfeale went ahead with a goal from Paul O`Connor, only for Cobh to score a dramatic second goal., three minutes into injury time. Extra time produced no further scores and it went to penalties. Abbeyfeale led by 3 goals to 2, following a fine save by Man of the Match goalkeeper, Noel Healy. Derry Quirke took the final penalty for Abbeyfeale, and the veteran defender calmly slotted home the winner to give Abbeyfeale utd a historic win.
28th Nov. Abbeyfeale Utd play Cobh Wanderers in Riverside Park on next Sunday 3rd December in the posponed 1st round of the Munster Senior Cup.
23th Nov.; Abbeyfeale Utd A play Newcastlewest on this Sunday 26th November In Riverside Park in an important league match. Kick-off 11.30 am. Abbeyfeale Utd B are away to to Ballyagran at 2.30 pm, also in the league.
The Abbeyfeale Utd Dinner Dance went ahead at The Devon Hotel on last Friday night, 17th November. It was a most enjoyable occasion and a great time was had by all. There were no less than five trophies on display at the top table, with pride of place being given to the Premier Championship Trophy, won by the club for the very first time last season. Awards were made to various players and officials. The Clubman of the Year award went to Seamus McNamara for his sterling work on the Lottery draw last season, and for organizing the advertising boards at Riverside Park. Seamus is, of course, a former chairman of Abbeyfeale Utd, having held the post for ten years. An award was made to the A Team Manager, Donal Casey, in recognition of his achievement in guiding the team to pemier league success. A special award went to U/16 player, Denis Behan, to mark his great achievement in winning four caps with the Republic of Ireland. Following the meal, presentations, and speeches, all adjorned to the bar and the dance floor where activities of a totally different, but equally enjoyable, nature continued until daybreak!
13th NOV. Abbeyfeale Utd were beaten by Broadford in the Munster Junior Cup. Broadford led by 2 goals to nil at half time. A. Browne gave Abbeyfeale hope with a good goal early in the second half, but Broadford went on to score 2 more goals and ran out deserving winners.
10th Nov; Abbeyfeale Utd play Broadford Utd in the second round of the Munster Junior Cup at Riverside Park on Sunday. Kick-off at 11.30 am.
The Republic of Ireland were beaten 2-0 by Spain tonight (31st Oct.) and failed to qualify.
Denis Behan failed to win his place on the starting line-up as the Republic of Ireland drew 0-0 with Latvia in a European U/16 qualifier. They must now beat Spain on Tuesday night to have any chance of progressing.
Abbeyfeale Utd A are away to Newmarket Celtic in a postponed second round F.A.I. junior cup game at 2.30 pm on Sunday.
The club will hold it`s annual Dinner Dance at The Devon Inn on Friday 17th November.
Denis Behan has been training with the Republic of Ireland U/16 squad and will be hoping to get his place on Brian Kerr`s team for the European qualifier against Latvia on Friday.
