John TIPLADY

It's very intriguing to speculate about whether my forebears knew (about)
yours.  My side has one possible candidate for the black-sheep slot, apart
from Frank Cookson:  John (known as Jack) Tiplady (see outline above) was
certainly a Remittance Man, but in Australia not S Africa.   A cousin of my
fathers writes about him as follows:  "A bad lot.  I'm not too sure what
form his badness took.  He was very good-looking and had lots of lovely
charm, and drank too much, but I don't think he was dishonest.  Anyway as
the result of some shenanigans (I've always wondered if he seduced a
Wetherby maiden) he was shipped off to Australia in 1924 or 5, where he
lived a fairly disreputable life until he married a lady called Rose who
straightened him out a bit.  After his parents' death my father made sure
that his share of the money was sent out to him monthly, as he'd have drunk
the capital in no time had he been able to get at it.  He and Rose had no
children.  According to Mary's family tree he died in 1968.  I don't know
what happened to Rose." RM008 Diana Pratt Yule
