Mars

More that any other planet in the solar system, Mars has sparked and sustained our curiosity. Early observers, drawn by its reddish color names it after the Roman god of war. Toward the end of the eighteenth century, astronomers began to wonder whether intelliget life-or life in any form-might exist on Mars. With the age of planetary exploration, we found that the fourth planet from the Sun is largely cratered and arid. But we also found a world filled with features we had not anticipated. We are still asking whether Mars may have supported some form of life in the past and whether life that is familiar or alien to us, complex or primitive, may thrive there now.
