LearningTime

These are some of the things the children are learning:

v      Reading the time on both analogue and digital clocks and changing the times from one form to another. We will be reading time in one-minute intervals.

v      Re-naming minutes as hours and minutes e.g. 110 minutes= 1hour 50 mins. And vice versa.

v      Reading dates from calendars.

v      Working out how old someone is.

v      Adding minutes:  e.g.     Hrs          Mins

2                               50

3                               58

___________

5            108   =  6 hours and 48 Minutes

Hours and Minutes must be added separately.

v      Subtracting hours and minutes:

                                      Hrs                Mins

7                                           23

             -2                  47

                ________________

                                                             4                   36

You must rename 1hr as 60 mins and bring it across to the minutes side

v      Both classes will be solving problems on the above.

5th class will also be learning to convert to and from the 24-hour time.

Ways that you can help at home:

Please encourage your child to read real bus / train timetables. There are various timetables including flight schedules on the aertel pages.

Look at calendars, diaries, and organisers on mobile phones e.t.c.

Examine T.V. guides – what time programmes begin and end.

How long do various programmes / films last, compare how much time in an hour is used for commercials compared to how much time is used for the actual show.

Estimate how long a certain activity takes, check then to see if you are right.

Keep track of how long she spends time in one 24-hour period: time spent sleeping, eating, reading, watching TV.

Try to use the “Time Language” (above) as much as possible.

There is an excellent web-site www.time-for-time.com where in the section called “Time for fun” children can be told how old they are in hours, minutes and seconds e.t.c.

Plenty of practice and drill will be required when converting times to 24 hour as this to many is a new concept.

The 6 and 5 number tables are being revised this week as they are relevant to telling the time.

We count up in 5’s for minutes and a we can compare counting up in 6’s with counting up in 60’s for how many minutes in one hr. i.e.

  6        60    1hr

12      120     2hrs

18      180     3hrs

24      240     4hrs
