Garnish

The Beaches

Moving west along the peninsula, following the road to Dursey Sound, you can find Garnish Beach. This beach, referred to locally in its Irish name Tranlecan, is a very safe place for swimming and is ideal for small children as it has a very gentle sandy slope into the Atlantic. It is sheltered from the east by Canalmore hill, and also from the west. The Garnish people claim that the water is usually a few degrees warmer than in other places.

The White Strand, a short walk from Garnish Beach in the direction of the pier, is also a popular destination for swimmers, and in recent years it appears that sand is being washed from Garnish Beach to the White Strand.

The area

There is a small Post Office next to the pier and a public telephone. A few small boats go out from the pier for lobster and fish. A few B&B's are within a short walk of the beaches.
