Allihies parish is on the very tip of the most south westerly peninsula in Ireland. Jutting out 50 km. into the Atlantic ocean from Ireland. Almost cut off from the world by the Caha mountains, only three narrow roads give access to this remote village. Despite the isolation, we are a lively, friendly and welcoming community.

The windswept beauty of the Allihies parish has inspired writers, filmmakers, musicians and artists. Historically the economy has been dependent on fishing, farming and in times past, the famous Copper mines.Check here for the latest news from allihies. Today many people are dependent on tourism although a few enterprising businesses are thriving. The four village Pubs are the place to start (and finish) any visit.

The parish boasts two active churches where mass is celebrated. Most children attend Cahermore National School until they are able to attend the community school in nearby Castletownbere. Accommodation is available at all times as seasoned visitors come all the year round.

Activities for leisure abound in Allihies. Hillwalking, fishing from shore or boat. Kayaking, beachcombing, birdwatching and cycling are all enjoyed here. Archaeology genealogy arts and language are taught if they are to exhausting just lying on the beach is to be recommended. follow this link for more details

Our New Bookshop featuring books of local interest is open...

If you've read McCarthy's Bar you might want to read his new book out now. (Hardback only at the moment.) cover

The quickest way to find what you want on the site is the Search box on the left. The site map will give you an idea of the extent of the site and the Advanced Search will give you the most recent pages. The news pages are out of date due to lack of effort on my part but there is some nice new photos put up recently. Plans include more about the new Mines Museum and an online quiz about the parish (When Frank writes it!).
Personally would love to see more input, particularly from young people. Especially personal views, in words or picture of your particular view of the parish.
