Anna Marie Leavy: International Watercolour Artist - Profile

NEW WORK BY ANNA MARIE

I have changed my style. My new paintings are painted in acrylics. They are mainly mountain scenes of Connemara, Mayo and Donegal in all kinds of weather. I am particularly enthusiastic about the mountains for their shapes, everchanging colour, and values - the relative lightness and darkness of tones. I seem to reap power from them when I'm putting the acrylic on the canvas.

The reason why I have changed my style and scenes came with my coming of age. Now that I am over 60, I am interested in continuing painting nature at its best, but not without exploring other mediums. With this I found that as an artist changing medium was crucial to the experimentation. I'm comfortable with being bold with acrylics for they are still water based. I just find that my method of applying the paint has changed, so I'm not washing the brush in my mouth as often any more.

My work is about Irish landscapes especially the mountains. A lot has to do with the changing times too. A new millennium means the beginning of a whole new cycle; something I am so glad to be part of.

Yours,
