The Anamcharadas movement is a ministry of Spiritual Direction, infused with Ignatian spirituality, whose main purpose is to provide soul friends/companions to those men and women who are serious about growing in their relationship with God, with themselves and with others. It is a movement of people who are trained to engage in the ministry of listening to and accompanying individuals in their search for God. In the past this kind of spiritual 'guidance' was rarely available, apart perhaps from the confessional, in a private talk with one of the parish clergy, or on a weekend retreat.

Anamcharadas started in Ireland in 1984, following the example of a group from Cincinnati, Ohio. In the early 1970s, this group of lay people started giving training courses to others, on the Art of Spiritual Companionship. The Anamcharadas training draws on the experience and teaching of St. Ignatius.

People trained in this ministry are available in Dublin (North Dublin and South Dublin), Mullingar, Navan and in other areas in Ireland. Through the ministry of spiritual companioning (spiritual direction), people are helped to recognise and articulate their experience of God in their day to day lives and in their prayer. This enables them to respond more freely and fully to God and to the world around them.
