THE BIKINI ISSUE
About the Project
Model: Gareth
The representation of women in the visual
media has become a crucial
area of concern for the women's movement.
Most energies have been put into
countering the stereotyping and sexism of
media images. Using a variety of
strategies, including deconstruction of dominant
visual codes, parody and role
reversal, The Bikini
Issue aims to take apart traditional ways of viewing the
female body and tries to find new images
with which to re-construct the
woman surfer.

In short, this web site hopes to subvert
the patriarchal stereotype of
women surfers and to reverse the image signifiers
so that they subvert the
traditional male view, partly by substituting
a consciously female gaze, partly by
parodying the patriarchal stereotypes through
role reversal.
