This is a list of the dates, venues and winners of National Ploughing Championships from 1971 to 1990.

1971
The National Championships in Finglas were poorly attended.
Dublin traffic obviously daunted a lot of people from the country and as a result the 1971 Championships were considered a financial loss for the Association.

1972
Seán O'Farrell, Wicklow, who was Managing Director of N.P.A. died in September, 1972, just weeks before this Event.
The support and help which the N.P.A. received at this difficult time will long be remembered.

1973
In 1973 Ireland hosted the World Ploughing, so both the World and National Ploughing were combined and run over four days and had well over 100,000 people attend the Event.
There were numerous demonstrations and displays to keep the crowds happy. I.C.A. demonstrations, sheep dog trials, clay pigeon shoots, tug of war, etc..
The Artane Boys Band, the Army Band and local bands gave recitals in the large marquee on the field.
25 countries sent representatives and the Event was considered a major success for the National Association.

1974
Vintage Machinery appeared for the first time and a demonstration was given with a Steam Engine and plough known as the "Lee Side Rover".
Competition for the Sheep Dog Trials were sponsored by the Agricultural Credit Corporation (A.C.C.). This attracted competitors from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

1975
The following demonstrations took place:
Horticulture, Flower Arranging, Curtain MAking, Rush Work, Interior Decorating, Crochet and Display, Farm & Household Accounts, DIY, Bale Collecting, Vintage Machinery, Threshing, Garden Tractors and Sheaf Tossing.
This annual event was fast becoming an Annual Festival for all the family.

1976
The interest in the horse ploughing never ceased, particularly in the very young and the very old. The young had never seen horse ploughing and for the older visitors it recalled happy days horse ploughing was the norm.

1977

1978
President and Mrs. Hillary were guests of the N.P.A. on Wednesday, October 11^th.

1979
The weather prior to the Championships was very wet and made conditions most unpleasant.
The Watergrasshill site was 700 feet above sea level.

1980
President Hillary, a past pupil of Rockwell College, attended this Event.
Mr. Lorcan Allen, Minister of State for Agriculture and whose father Denis Allen was a co-founder of the Association, also attended.

1981
1981 was the Golden Jubilee of the National Ploughing Association. Ireland also hosted the World Ploughing in 1981.
Mr. Alan Dukes, Minister for Agriculture attended on Thursday and Saturday.
President Hillary attended on Friday, the opening of the World Ploughing.

1982
This Event included the Macra na Feirme Farm Tasks Carnival Amusements for children, threshing with an old mill and elevator and an exhibition by ACOT dealing with the education of young farmers.

1983
President Hillary and Mr. Austin Deasy, Minister for Agriculture were among those who attended the 1983 Event.

1984
Ardfert was in the happy position of being able to accommodate thousands from Tralee to Ardfert which meant that all the supporters were housed within a radius of 20 miles from the site.
There was a Vintage Ploughing competition for the first time. Depth of ploughing in this class was 5 inches.

1985
The return of the National Ploughing to Athy after a 30 year absence was a welcomed with great enthusiasm. 1985 also saw the introduction of a Shopping Arcade. The specially built temporary structure was laid out in units of 12 ft square and these units were rented out to Insurance companies, drapery stores and other businesses. It proved to be a great success.

The ploughing competitions were held on the Greene Farm in Kilkea. The father of the farm owners had been closely associated with the Championships when last held in Athy in 1955 on the occasion of the N.P.A's Silver Jubilee.

1986
The weather conditions in Kilkenny were ideal for a ploughing contest and during the Event water was brought in for sprinkling in order to keep down the dust. Unfortunately the ground was very stoney and proved difficult for the ploughing competitors.

1987
The Shopping Arcade was erected again and this year additional space had to be provided in the form of a large tent so as to cater for the increasing demand for indoor space.

1988
This was the first three day National Event.
It was also the first year of a special Kverneland Class of 12 competitors. There were five competitors from the Republic of Ireland and the rest came from Holland, Norway, Northern Ireland, Great Britain, Denmark and Germany.
The Competition was won by the twice World Champion, Desmond Wright, Northern Ireland and the runner up was John Tracey, Carlow.
The winner received a cash prize of £1,000
1988 also saw the introduction of the
Intermediate Tractor Class
The first winner in this class was John O'Connell, Limerick
