Identity statements as agreed at AGM 1997

Catholic
Viatores Christi is a Catholic organisation seeking to apply Gospel values to a world in need of Christ's healing power. Rooted in this living tradition, we exercise our responsibilities, operating in partnership and making our own unique contribution.

Lay
We are lay people, single or married, employed or unemployed, working in the home or retired. We come from all walks of life and all levels of education, co-responsible with clergy and religious for Christ's mission on earth. We must have the courage of our baptism to challenge practices, where we find them, which are in conflict with Gospel values.

Missionary
"The whole church is missionary and the work of evangelisation is a fundamental duty of the People of God"- (Ad Gentes)
Members are prepared to serve part of their lives reaching across geographical and /or cultural boundaries to where their skills are needed to help others and at the same time serve as a personal witness of Christ's message.

Spiritual
Conscious of our own need for spiritual renewal, we look to a reflective approach in sharing scripture, discernment and prayer. Our motivation comes from the depths of our inner selves where we encounter the indwelling spirit of God.

Eucharistic
The Eucharist is pivotal to the community which is following Jesus Christ. The mass is the dynamic power of Christianity for all of us and to the extent to which each of us unites ourselves to Christ's sacrifice we will become more effective instruments of his work.

Radical
Using personal skills through effective teamwork and informed by current insights, we actively promote freedom, justice and peace, favouring action based on Christian principles. We accept a leadership role in the Church, in face of gross injustices and inequalities in the world that are diametrically contrary to the vision of Christ for God's Kingdom.

United and Diverse
In our own diversity and in those among whom we serve, we recognise Christ, our brother and sister. As a loving community we strive to care for one another at different stages before, during and after assignment and in the many duties undertaken for the common cause.

Ecumenical
We especially seek ever closer ties with other Christians at home and abroad, co-operating in prayer and in joint action, working towards the fulfilment of the Lord's wish " that they may be one".

Prepared
A distinguishing feature of our organisation is the training programme which has three dimensions: (1) Spiritual (2) Country / Cultural Orientation, (3) Experience of Group Activity

Decision Making
In determining policy, we try to make decisions by consensus.

Membership
Membership of Viatores Christi shall be open to Catholics who wish to participate in its work and to further its aim and objectives, who are open to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and who accept its basic policies.

The following identity Statement is additional to the above.
Viatores Christi is a lay missionary association within the Catholic Tradition. Motivated by the example of Jesus' life, we are called to be prophetic in our dealings with one another, our Church and our world. Since 1960, we have been working co-operatively at home and overseas, sharing in Christ's mission by promoting the dignity and integral development of the human person. We continue to do so through recruitment, a preparation programme, placement and mutual support.
