Inspiration:

hand sketchMy work to date has primarily been concerned with the human body, either directly or symbolically. I am interested in how culture codifies the physical attributes of the body - seen especially in the fashion industry - and also how we relate the body to forms found in nature. I discovered through histology manuals the fascinating patterns and shapes found in body tissues and fluids. This led me to produce work which explored the bodily functions of renewal and reproduction. I have also used the cores of exotic fruits as symbols of reproduction, where colour (reds), form (seeds) and texture (ripe flesh) are those we identify with the body's sensual qualities.

drawingClothing, being an obvious symbol of the body, inspired me to create a series of paintings and drawings of women's lingerie and accessories. These objects in particular have connotations relating to how the female body is perceived. Painted in high detail, some pieces depict a single item placed against a stark, flat area of colour; others employ a certain degree of narrative. In all cases, I have attempted to trigger the imagination of the viewer into wondering what kind of individual is connected to these objects - what image do they portray of the modern female.

Recent work involves a series of paintings of the figure, both male and female. In these, I have been most interested in describing the delicate transparency and tonal variations of human flesh. In all of my work, surface qualities such as texture and the intrinsic characteristics of the paint are just as important as the subject matter. For me, the impact of the purely visual in a work of art is greater than that which necessitates long explanation to engage the viewer.

This website represents a cross-section of my work from 1999-2002.
