Flowers in History from an Exhibition staged by members of Solas Nua, Contemporary Design Group

in the Botanics Gardens, Dublin 19th & 20th Sept. 2003 - Since the beginning of recorded history floral decoration has played an important part in the history of art.

Egyptian - 3000 - 332 B.C. - Art in ancient Egypt was highly stylised with the lotus playing an important part

Greek/Roman 600-146 B.C. -.. while flowers and foliage played an important part they were mainly used in the making of wreaths and garlands.

 

.............Chinese 960 - 1912 A.D. In Chinese homes flowers in vases and dwarfed trees (bonsai) in pots have been used for generations, and have played an important part in Chinese culture.

 

Italian Renaissance 1400-1600 - Art belonged primarily to the church at the start of this period. Renaissance or re-birth the revival & flowering of art & letters after the dark ages. Man became important in his own right and flowers were used in art other than church art.

Dutch 1600 -1800 - In the manner of a Dutch Flower Piece

 

 

 

 

Flemish 1600-1800- massed flowers of many different seasons

Victorian 1830 - 1901

Flowers were used anuwhere and everywhere, glass domes with dried flowers were also popular. laces and velvets and cluttered rooms were the order of the day.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Art Nouveau 1890 - 1914

fluid and sinuous lines with the famous whiplash style were evident in decor and in flower decorations.

 
   

 

 

Art Deco 1920-1939 - strong geometric styles and bright colours in contrast to the fluid lines of Art Nouveau

Hogarth Curve - The start of the "Traditional Style" 1950s - Vertical line arrangements and crescents as well as the hogart curve.
