Since it was established Aontas Ogra Youth Club has always preserved an interest in ceilidh dancing as part of our Irish heritage. Ceilidh (or Irish dancing) is centuries old but still provides a unique opportunity for enjoyment and socialising. Over the years in the Town Hall, St John's Hall, and Dreamland thousands of people danced'The Walls of Limerick"," Siege of Ennis", "Siamsa Beirte" and many other great dances to the lively music of the "Gallowglass" and"Ardellis "Ceilidh Bands under band leaders Pat McGarr and BrianLawler.Old time dancing was also included, the waltz and military two-step being the most popular. While many a toe was bruised while learning these dances, those who persisted were well rewarded, for the "good dancer"was always on demand and never left sitting.
Today ceilidh dancing is still immensely popular. We hope we have played our part in its preservation.
