Windows Setup

A far better reference on this topic is available from Carter.cc Go take a look.

Here are the things that you'll need to check on your computer:
--- Windows CD Drive Auto-Insert Notification
--- Change CDRWin CACHE settings
--- Disable Microsoft Office Find Fast
--- Defrag Your Hard Disk
--- Disable Any Event Utilities
--- Keep Your CD-R Cool
--- Use a Fast Hard Disk
--- Shut Down Other Applications
--- Restoring Corrupt Drivers
.....after Adaptec, Nero or WinOnCD screws up your Windows Setup.

Many of the above suggestions will also help you keep away from the dreaded buffer under run errors you may encounter.

Turning Off Auto-Insert Notification in Windows 95/98
This is the utility that starts up the auto run program when a CD is inserted into your CD-Rom or CD-W. It is recommended by most recording software to turn off (AIN). The Exception to this is DIRECT CD which must have AIN turned on. To disable Auto-Insert Notification open the 'Control Panel' (from 'My Computer' or the 'Settings' tab from the 'Start Button'). From the "System" icon Select "Device Manager" tab. Under CD-ROM, select each CD-Rom/CD-W and click on the 'Properties tab, click on the "Settings" tab, and uncheck the "Auto Insert Notification" checkbox. Its only when data has started to be writen to a blank disc that windows attempts to try and read the CDR disc with 'Autorun and Autoplay' and so it should be turn off.

Change CDRWin Cache Settings
With CDRWin it is possible to set a cache file on the 'Devices and Settings' page.

Disable Microsoft Find Fast.
A utility included with Microsoft Office, called "FindFast", will occasionally start up and scan your hard drives. Disable this by deleting the shortcut in the C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp folder.

Defragmenting Your Hard Disk In Windows 95/98.
Goto the 'Start Button', 'Programs', 'Accessories', 'System Tools', 'Disk defragmenter'. This opens the Microsoft Disk Defrag program. Select the drive that you need to Defrag. Depending on the size of your Hard Drive this may take quite a time.

Disabling Event Software
Turn off 'auto run' event software. These include Screen Savers, Anti-virus software and Fax auto-answer services. You can re-enable it after you're done recording.

Keep Your CD-R Cool
Try to keep a space of 20mm above and below your CD-R burner to let cool air flow around. Your burner will not work if it gets to HOT, above 40degC. Keep the cables neat and tidy and away from any air vents at the back of the burner. If you think it's getting to hot inside the computer case then fit another fan to draw in cooling air.

Using A Fast Hard Disk
Not such a problem now. Just make sure to have 700mb of space for the image of your psx game.

Close All Other Programs
Make sure you've got all other programs closed before you try burning your CD's. But with my SCSI setup I am still able to mutitask. The only problem I had was when trying to play an audio CD while burning a CDR. The MS Media Player program was looking at the CDR burner for an audio disc which was in fact in the CD-Rom.

Restoring Corupt Drivres.
How to re-extract the files one needs once Adaptec, Nero or WinOnCD screws with your setup.
Try this next time:
1. Start your computer in MS-DOS mode. (*NOT* a DOS window!!!)
2. At the DOS prompt, enter the following:
C:\>ren c:\windows\system\winaspi.dll winaspi.bak <enter>
C:\>ren c:\windows\system\wnaspi32.dll wnaspi32.bak <enter>
C:\>ren c:\windows\system\iosubsys\apix.vxd apix.bak <enter>
3. Put the Windows 95/98 CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive (we'll assume that it's drive D).
4. Enter the following lines, substituting the drive letter for your CD-ROM in place of d:

For WINDOWS 95:
C:\>extract /y /l c:\windows\system d:\win95\win95_03.cab winaspi.dll <enter>
C:\>extract /y /l c:\windows\system d:\win95\win95_03.cab wnaspi32.dll <enter>
C:\extract /y /l c:\windows\system\iosubsys d:\win95\win95_03.cab apix.vxd <enter>

For WINDOWS 98:
C:\>extract /y /l c:\windows\system d:\win98\win98_40.cab winaspi.dll <enter>
C:\>extract /y /l c:\windows\system d:\win98\win98_40.cab wnaspi32.dll <enter>
C:\>extract /y /l c:\windows\system\iosubsys d:\win98\win98_47.cab apix.vxd <enter>
5. Restart your computer.
That should clear up most problems without having to re-install Windows, or formatting your Hard drive.
