Aromatherapy
Tips will
be added continually.
When using Essential Oils in the bath - DON'T drop them in as the bath is filling, drop them in just before you get in that way you get the full benefit of the oils both in the water and as they evaporate into the air. The reason you should dilute essential oils in either some alcohol or milk before you put them in your bath: oil and water do not mix so by adding oil to a little milk or alcohol first the oil molecules will disperse in the water. This way you ensure that as you step out of the bath the oil won't be lifted off the surface by your skin and that you will not be irritated by it, eg Lemon, Peppermint or Black Pepper would be very irritating used neat on skin. During the
summer a dainty way of using oils and keeping insects away (and fun for
kids): using some
ribbon drop some oils onto them and tie them in the trees near where you sit. The wind
will flutter them about and the scent will float in the air. When taking an evening walk along the beach in summer rub your legs and feet with some Lavender oil (or any other insect repellant mixed with cream) or alternatively put a drop or two of Lavender oil on the ankles of your trousers or long skirt - this will help prevent the sand flies from biting your ankles. After waxing apply some Lavender cream to the waxed area - it will help keep down redness and sooth you almost immediately. With Athletes foot: as it's a fungal infection the perfect oil is Tea Tree Oil. Simply apply one drop, neat, per toe about three/four times a day and it won't be long before it's given the boot. You can also use Tea Tree Oil in the washing of your socks and sprinkle a drop or two in each shoe to help ensure it doesn't return - and make sure your feet are well dry after bathing. Again, with Athletes Foot you can put some drops of Tea Tree Oil into your Talcum Power which you will use on your feet after you've washed and dried them or even just to freshen them up a bit. When you feel a migraine coming on head straight for the Peppermint Oil. Inhaling this oil as soon as you can will help prevent the migraine from developing fully. If you have students studying or are studying yourself: use Basil or Rosemary in a burner in the study area - it aids focus and concentration When using essential Oils in your shampoo - TAKE THE LID OFF THE OIL BOTTLE BEFORE YOU START!! It can be quite difficult to take the lid off with shampoo already in your hand! If your children are coming in from school with warnings about head lice - use Lavender, Tea Tree or Geranium Oil in their shampoo. It will help prevent the lice crossing to them and if they have the little critters already it will help get rid of them - and the best thing about this is you use no nasty chemicals! When you've washed the shampoo out you can give the hair a rinse in your chosen oil for extra protection (no need to wash out). If you have fair hair rinse with diluted Lemon after shampooing, if you have dark hair rinse with Rosemary (do not use if you have high blood pressure). Both will add shine and enrich your colour. Did you know you can use essential oils on your dogs too?! Did you know that Essential Oils are commonly found in many natural flea and tick control products today?! You can shampoo your dog with Clary Sage, Citronella, Peppermint, Lemon, Tangerine, Tea Tree, Naiouli, Eucalyptus or Sweet Orange to help keep the fleas away - just add two drops to shampoo in your hands and wash away. For older, tired
or ill dogs: massage them lightly with a blend of Rosemary*, Tangerine
and Ylang Ylang or sprinkle on their bedding.
