Castlemahon School
Next store to Geary's pub in Castlemahon there was O' Callaghan's
school. The teachers were Michael O' Callaghan and Morris Ahern. They thought
French, History, Irish and Maths,Latin and Greek. Pupils came from Munster and
stayed in local houses. Pupils later went on to qualify as teachers,doctors and
priests and took up high positions in life the O'Callaghan school closed down
in 1878. |
Mother Mary Walsh, O.P.
One of the most inspiring ladies to attend Castlemahon school in the late 1800's was Mary Walsh of Ardine, Castlemahon. She was born in London of Irish parent's in the year 1850. She was later to find an Order of Nun's in New York called the Dominican Sisters of the sick and poor. She worked with various charities, today the sisters are nurses and they continue to help the sick and the poor they have Convents world wide. |
