Paudie Phelan was born on the 14.2.75 and from his earliest years he had always shown a definite inclination for Martial Arts. At 17 he went to a fitness institute in Dublin and qualified as a Gym instructor. In the Summer of `95 while working in Limerick he met Ger McNamara, and on Ger`s advice he started training at powerlifting. After only three weeks in Tommy Dillon`s gym at Southill, Paudie competed in the Irish junior 100kg class and broke the previous Irish record which was held for 15 years.
In March of `98 he won the Munster senior title. In June of the same year he made a new Irish Intermediate record and later broke his own record. In October he got his first cap for Ireland in Glasgow and came second.
In March 1999 after a short break he won the Munster Seniors and later in that year he came second in the Irish Senior 100kg Championship. At the moment he is still training hard for the Irish team.
The Late Tommy Quaid
On Tuesday 6th October 1998, the news that Tommy Quaid had been in a serious accident filtered through the parish of Feohanagh /Castlemahon. For the next few days people spoke of nothing else and it dawned that Tommy was indeed fighting for his life, but knowing his fighting spirit nobody was pessimistic. Finally on October 10th Tommy was called to his eternal reward at 41 years.
Tommy Quaid was a sporting genius, everything he turned his hand to he made a success; hurling, football, golf etc. From the first day he caught a hurley he was special on the green of Dangenbeg and Ahawilk.
He served his County with distinction at minor and U21 level and as a senior goalkeeper for 18 consectitive seasons. He won National league and Munster medals and an All Star Award in 1992. His loyalty to his club was phenomenal; a fifty two mile round trip from Effin wasn`t a problem. Tommy won County junior, intermediate hurling and football titles in 1993.
Tommy was also an excellent administrator, being Chairman of the Limerick Youth Development Committee which set a five year plan for underage hurling in the county. Tommy's contribution was immense even when he moved to Effin.
It was Tommy's ambition to win an All Ireland Senior hurling medal, a feat which sadly eluded him or to coach a team to an All Ireland glory, Wasn't it ironic that when his Intermediate team were doing him proud in Thurles, the lord was blowing his final whistle on Tommy great career.
The legacy which he left Feohanagh /Castlemahon will only be fully appreciated well into the new Millennium.
Lament for Tommy Quaid By Garry McMahon
The apples in the orchard, are ripe for picking now Brown gold and red, the leaves are shed from bare and drooping brough, The Chestnuts too are falling, laying scattered through the glade But a hurler’s eye won’t see them- Feohanagh`s Tommy Quaid.
He`d catch a swooping swallow going through a barn door Our goalman with the eagle eye whose face we`ll see no more He ruled the square with skill and flair undaunted, unafraid But his race is done, our darling son Feohanagh`s Tommy Quaid.
From seventy six to ninety three his was a staring role Leading by example as he guarded Limerick’s goal, `Tis hard to understand it all as in cold clay he is laid whey did he have to die so soon Feohanagh`s Tommy Quaid.
We cheered him in Killarney, in Cork and Thurles town, Croke Park, the Cooley Mountains, likewise the Gaelic Grounds, Our All star from West Limerick his fame will never fade The best we’ve seen in white and green- Feohanagh`s Tommy Quaid.
We`ll oft recall how he pucked the ball with sweet and stylish strike As his hurley blade is cut a swathe through friends and foe alike, With lightening fast reflexes t`was many the goal he saved Will we ever see his likes again - Feohanagh`s Tommy Quaid?
He met his doom in life`s full bloom, our tears flow fast and free For his grieving wife, his parents dear and his loving children three, Today he lies in Effin, here on earth his last game played But Heaven has a goal now- Feohanagh`s Tommy Quaid.
