It had many of its features broken and disfigured by 1840 although its walls were still perfect. Only the eastern end of Robertstown castle then remained standing on the edge of an inlet from the Shannon.

It including Foynes Island, had 1,794 inhabitants in 1831. The system of agriculture was considered backward by Samuel Lewis who wrote that large portions of land were cultivated with the spade while manure was carried to the fields on the shoulders of the women.
