Scoil Íosaf was originally a Convent of Mercy primary school. The original school known as St. Josephs was first opened in 1887. As numbers increased in the early 1960's it was decided to build a new school. The present school building was opened in September 1966. An extention to this building was completed in 1979.

The first lay principal was Mrs. Joan Callaghan was appointed in 1991. On the Eve of the new millenium the Sisters of Mercy bid farewell to Newcastle West bringing to an end 150 years od dedicated service to education in the town.


Scoil Íosaf Today

Scoil Íosaf is an all girls primary school meeting the education needs of pupils from Junior Infants to Sixth class. It has a staff of 11 teachers including learning support and resource teachers, a school secretary, a caretaker, a classroom assistant and a special needs assistant.

At Scoil Íosaf we strive for excellence in all areas of the curriculum. Subjects on the curriculum include: Irish, English, Mathematics, History, Geography, Science, Visual Arts, Music, Drama, S.P.H.E and religion.

Prize Winning Garden

Children from all classes help in the school garden. In 2001 the school was awarded first prize in the Primary School's Garden Competition for Co. Limerick
