Four Wheel Steering

Back in 1985 Nissan produced the first mass produced 4 wheel steering system and that was not even on the GT-R models but the more tamer version of Skyline. It worked by steering the back wheels in the same direction as the front ones with a maximum angle of 0.5 degrees using hydraulics. While been quite simple it none the less made a real improvement in handling stability.

Today 4 wheel steering in the Nissan skyline is a lot much more complex using Nissan's Super HICAS technology. The super HIICAS system uses sensors, sending information to the onboard computer, with this the computer can decide in which way to control the back wheels in relation to the front while taking into count road conditions. As you can imagine this truly increases the handling while cornering at high speeds.

Interesting to note, the super HICAS system causes the back of the car to slide out making it oversteer. While this may sound like a bad thing to the average driver, it is instead pleases many fast car drivers. To have a car oversteer means not having understeer which is by the way not desirable since the driver only option is to slow down before going off track. But with oversteer, the slide can be controlled by a skilled driver thus been more desirable. Although with the onboard computer of the skyline even an below average driver may not get into trouble with the super HICAS system.
