THE FAMINE YEARS

Potatoes, that's all they had to eat and in the famine years when the potato crop failed the people died of the hunger. When people had good land at that time he evicted them out of the good land and kept it. The landlord had to be paid the rent always and the corn or whatever they had was taken and shipped off to England to pay the rent. they were terrible times. They had all this side of the parish. All woodpark and all back up to the mountains back up for miles they had it good and bad as it was. 'Twas stocked with pheasants and rabbits and deer and everything but if you were caught killing a deer you'd be transported, or killing a pheasant or a rabbit. You couldn't take anything. You would be transported out to Tasmania or somewhere. I remember when the landlords were here, I do. I remember when Hibart was here. This the longest memory in my head and I only a child. I can remember hearing an awful lot of noise. We were out playing. 'twas a Sunday I think and we heard a lot of noise. We didn't know what it was. 'Twas armored cars and Hibert was after being raided and there was a lot of military around. I remember the Black and Tans. I remember them coming into our house. They'd search from house to house and you had to put the name of everybody living in the house on the back of your door in writing. It had to be there when they'd come so that they knew everyone when they'd come and you had to account for everyone.
