Short History

  • 1974 : Ballinteer Community School opened in September of that year in a number of prefabricated buildings.  Construction began immediately on the current site which was completed in 1976.  Mr. Aidan J. McGovern was appointed Principal and Mr. Paddy Byrne Vice Principal.

  • 1975 : A special unit for the integrated teaching of physically disabled students - one of three of its kind in Ireland - was established.

  • 1980 : Austen Corcoran was appointed Vice Principal.  Enrolment reached 1,024 students and over 60 teachers were employed.

  • 1993 : On the decease of Mr. Aidan McGovern, Dr. Austen Corcoran was appointed Principal and Mr. Danny Cussen Deputy Principal.

  • 1994 : The Transition year programme was introduced.

  • 1995 : The 21st Anniversary of the founding of the school was celebrated and substantial development took place.  This included the construction of two Home Economics rooms and development of a Multimedia Centre

  • 1996 : The Leaving Certificate Applied was introduced.


The Ethos of the school is promoted in an inclusive way so that students, irrespective of their varied religious traditions have a strong conviction of their Faith and the intellectual curiosity and religious commitment to develop and deepen their knowledge of it.
