MAYO SENIOR MENS
BASKETBALL LEAGUE
BALLINA COLTS 88
CASTLEBAR BULLS 67
Ballina Colts moved to the top of the
table after a fine display against last
years league winners. This young Colts
team got off to the best of starts with a
long range shot from David Melia, the
same player followed it up with a three
pointer to push Ballina into the lead 8-4.
Fergal Mc Andrew replied for Castlebar
with two free throws and a outside shot.
Ballina increased their lead at the end
of the quarter to 20-14 with Padraic
Roche scoring twice from long-range shots.
At the start of the second Quarter, Colts
continued to control the game and added
further three pointers from Padraic Roche
and David Melia once again to lead 30-20.
Castlebar's superior height under the
boards was telling with Martin Newcombe
and Fergal Mc Andrew scoring inside. Colm
Leonard then raced down the court to
score on the fast break to leave the
score 32- 28. After a great drive to the
basket Colm Leonard added another basket
and he was fouled, he successfully
converted the free throw to leave the
score 35-28. Edwin Quinn kept Castlebar
close with a good score to leave it 37-32
at the break.
At the start of the second half Ballina
introduced sixteen year olds Stephen
Hughes and Shane Melia. But it was
Castlebar that got the better start with
a three pointer from Kieran Conway and
two scores in a row from Edwin Quinn to
lead for the first time 39-37. . At this
stage Ballina full court press started to
work and great steals set up Leonard and
Roche for easy ssores. Stephen Hughes got
another score with a great drive to the
basket. Colm Leonard and Shane Melia
added several free throws to push Ballina
into a 54 - 39 lead. Fergal Mc Andrew
gave Castlebar some hope with a three
pointer, but Padraic Roche sunk another
three pointer. Shane Melia pushed the
Ballina lead to 64- 45 at the end of the
third quarter with a big three pointer.
In the third quarter Ballina continued to
press and Colin Kennedy stretched the
lead to 74 - 47, with four baskets in a
row. Paul Heverin got some good scores
for Castlebar inside, but the speed of
this young Colts was too much for a
tiring Castlebar team. Colts running all
their bench players and on the fast break
Brain O Malley added a further three
baskets. Castlebar did not give in with
Gerry Ryder and John Towey scoring some
good baskets, but at the end of the game
Simon Walshe gave Ballina a 88 -67 lead
with a great three pointer .In a great
team performance Ballina will be
encouraged by the performances Brain O
Malley, Colin Kennedy, Stephen Hughes and
Shane Melia, all these players are from
the under 17 team. Castlebar had good
displays from Fergal Mc Andrew, Edwin
Quinn and Stephen Cullen.
