Ballina Colts moved to the top of the table after a fine display against last years league winners. This young Colts team got off to the best of starts with a long range shot from David Melia, the same player followed it up with a three pointer to push Ballina into the lead 8-4. Fergal Mc Andrew replied for Castlebar with two free throws and a outside shot. Ballina increased their lead at the end of the quarter to 20-14 with Padraic Roche scoring twice from long-range shots.
At the start of the second Quarter, Colts continued to control the game and added further three pointers from Padraic Roche and David Melia once again to lead 30-20. Castlebar's superior height under the boards was telling with Martin Newcombe and Fergal Mc Andrew scoring inside. Colm Leonard then raced down the court to score on the fast break to leave the score 32- 28. After a great drive to the basket Colm Leonard added another basket and he was fouled, he successfully converted the free throw to leave the score 35-28. Edwin Quinn kept Castlebar close with a good score to leave it 37-32 at the break.

At the start of the second half Ballina introduced sixteen year olds Stephen Hughes and Shane Melia. But it was Castlebar that got the better start with a three pointer from Kieran Conway and two scores in a row from Edwin Quinn to lead for the first time 39-37. . At this stage Ballina full court press started to work and great steals set up Leonard and Roche for easy ssores. Stephen Hughes got another score with a great drive to the basket. Colm Leonard and Shane Melia added several free throws to push Ballina into a 54 - 39 lead. Fergal Mc Andrew gave Castlebar some hope with a three pointer, but Padraic Roche sunk another three pointer. Shane Melia pushed the Ballina lead to 64- 45 at the end of the third quarter with a big three pointer.
In the third quarter Ballina continued to press and Colin Kennedy stretched the lead to 74 - 47, with four baskets in a row. Paul Heverin got some good scores for Castlebar inside, but the speed of this young Colts was too much for a tiring Castlebar team. Colts running all their bench players and on the fast break Brain O Malley added a further three baskets. Castlebar did not give in with Gerry Ryder and John Towey scoring some good baskets, but at the end of the game Simon Walshe gave Ballina a 88 -67 lead with a great three pointer .In a great team performance Ballina will be encouraged by the performances Brain O Malley, Colin Kennedy, Stephen Hughes and Shane Melia, all these players are from the under 17 team. Castlebar had good displays from Fergal Mc Andrew, Edwin Quinn and Stephen Cullen.
