Senior Mens Basketball League 22/11/2000
Ballina Colts 74
Ballina Hawks 55
Ballina Colts overcame an experienced
Ballina Hawks team in the local derby
game played in Scoil Padraig on Wednesday
night last. Hawks with Terry Kennedy and
Martin scoring give them a 12-3 lead
after five minutes. Ballina Colts fought
back with three pointers from Colm
Leonard and Padraic Roche to lead 19-14
after the first quarter . In the second
quarter the Colts increased their lead
with exciting fast break baskets and good
outside shooting to leave the scores 36-29
at the break .
In the third quarter the hawks cut the
lead to two points with good man to man
defence , but David Melia hit a big three
pointer at the end of the quarter to
restore the Colts lead to five points 47-42.
In the final quarter the Colts took
complete control out scoring the Hawks 27-13,
Colts superior fitness was evident with
Brain OMalley and Martin Wynne scoring
great scores on the break . At this stage
the Colts defence and workrate was the
difference between the teams. Best for
the Colts were Colm Leonard, Martin Wynne
and Man of the match Padraic Roche, for
the Hawks Martin Conroy and Mark
Cunnigham had good games. Nine of the the
Ballina Colts team play in Belfast next
weekend in the Junior Mens National Cup,
in games against top Super League Clubs
Star of the Sea ( Belfast ), Marian (
Dublin ) and holders Killester ( Dublin )
The team also features National League
players Paul Freeman, Kevin Lenehan and
Kevin Moran. The club won the Junior B
Cup last year. Best of luck to the team
at the weekend.
