Lundy Foods Ballina had a convincing win over Athy on Saturday evening at Gortnor Abbey gym. In this mid table clash, Ballina had a starting five of Fergus Foody, Colm Leonard, David Melia, Padraic Roche and Paul Freeman, with regular starters Aidan Tighe and Gearoid Leonard missing.

At the start of the game Ballina were in trouble with Athy controlling both offence and defence boards. Athys Tony O Keefe scoring with easy and the homeside looked like they were in trouble. Colm Leonard kept Ballina in the game in the first quarter with seven points, But Athy lead at the end of the quarter 17-9.
At the start of the second quarter Athy increased their lead to 25-9. At this stage Ballina rearranged their defence with Kevin Lenahan coming of the bench to play centre. Again it was Colm Leonard to spark Lundy Foods back to life, with a great three pointer and he followed it up with a steal to score on the fast break. Leonard then had to leave the game with an injury but Fergus Foody made a great baseline move to score and he followed it up with a free throw after being fouled. In the last minute of the quarter Kevin Lenahan added further baskets on the fast break after great defence. At the end of the half Paul Freeman Stool the Basketball with three seconds on the clock and he raced down the court to slam dunk the basket, Ballina had brought back a sixteen point Athy lead to lead 29-28 at the break.
In a tight third quarter both teams went basket for basket. Ballina were relying on the outside shooting of Fergus Foody and Colm Leonard, whilst for Athy the Cardiff brothers Alan and Brain were coming up with the scores to keep them in touch. Ballina led 46-43 at the end third quarter, but Athys three big boards' players were all in foul trouble with four fouls each.

At the start of the last quarter big Paul Freeman got into the game with three baskets in a row, Fergus Foody followed them up with another outside shoot to lead 56-47, Ballina had now gained control of the game. Padraic Roche followed up with a three pointer and then another two just inside the three point line. Brain Cardiff replied for Athy with a three pointer of his own to cut the Ballina lead to 61-52. Once again Foody and Freeman replied for this Ballina team that was not going to give up. In the last minute Padraic Roche successful made several free throws, which the team made 8o percent off in the game. In the dying seconds Paul Freeman added another three pointer to leave the end score 71-55 in a highly entertaining game. Lundy Foods had good displays from Colm Leonard, Paul Freeman, Kevin Lenahan and man of the match Fergus Foody.

Lundy Foods play Moycullen Galway next Saturday night in Gortnor Abbey at 8.00 p.m. A big crowd is expected in what should a very entertaining game.
Ballina Colts play Castlebar Bulls in the Mayo senior men's league at Scoil Padraig on Wednesday night tip off 7.15 p.m. All welcome.
