LUNDY FOODS BALLINA 71
TEGRAL ATHY 55
Lundy Foods Ballina had a convincing win
over Athy on Saturday evening at Gortnor
Abbey gym. In this mid table clash,
Ballina had a starting five of Fergus
Foody, Colm Leonard, David Melia, Padraic
Roche and Paul Freeman, with regular
starters Aidan Tighe and Gearoid Leonard
missing.
At the start of the game Ballina were in
trouble with Athy controlling both
offence and defence boards. Athys Tony O
Keefe scoring with easy and the homeside
looked like they were in trouble. Colm
Leonard kept Ballina in the game in the
first quarter with seven points, But Athy
lead at the end of the quarter 17-9.
At the start of the second quarter Athy
increased their lead to 25-9. At this
stage Ballina rearranged their defence
with Kevin Lenahan coming of the bench to
play centre. Again it was Colm Leonard to
spark Lundy Foods back to life, with a
great three pointer and he followed it up
with a steal to score on the fast break.
Leonard then had to leave the game with
an injury but Fergus Foody made a great
baseline move to score and he followed it
up with a free throw after being fouled.
In the last minute of the quarter Kevin
Lenahan added further baskets on the fast
break after great defence. At the end of
the half Paul Freeman Stool the
Basketball with three seconds on the
clock and he raced down the court to slam
dunk the basket, Ballina had brought back
a sixteen point Athy lead to lead 29-28
at the break.
In a tight third quarter both teams went
basket for basket. Ballina were relying
on the outside shooting of Fergus Foody
and Colm Leonard, whilst for Athy the
Cardiff brothers Alan and Brain were
coming up with the scores to keep them in
touch. Ballina led 46-43 at the end third
quarter, but Athys three big boards'
players were all in foul trouble with
four fouls each.
At the start of the last quarter big Paul
Freeman got into the game with three
baskets in a row, Fergus Foody followed
them up with another outside shoot to
lead 56-47, Ballina had now gained
control of the game. Padraic Roche
followed up with a three pointer and then
another two just inside the three point
line. Brain Cardiff replied for Athy with
a three pointer of his own to cut the
Ballina lead to 61-52. Once again Foody
and Freeman replied for this Ballina team
that was not going to give up. In the
last minute Padraic Roche successful made
several free throws, which the team made
8o percent off in the game. In the dying
seconds Paul Freeman added another three
pointer to leave the end score 71-55 in a
highly entertaining game. Lundy Foods had
