BALLINODE COLLEGE
School starts at 9.05 a.m., there is a morning break from 10.55 to 11.15, and lunch is from 1.05 to 1.40. All students stay in school at lunchtime. All breaks are supervised by teachers.
Canteen facilities are available for lunch. Supervised study from 3.30 to 5.00 p.m. is available.
There is a Book Loan scheme in operation, where all text books are provided for a small fee.
School uniform is green jumper, black trousers and white polo shirt.
Class sizes are small, and resource teachers are available for students who experience learning difficulties
There is a Career Guidance/ Counsellor for students to discuss problems and to give advice on subject choice, third level education, etc.
Parent teacher meetings are held regularly, and parents are encouraged to visit the school to discuss any matters regarding their child’s education.
Students are bussed to Sligo Tennis Club for Physical Education, and are encouraged to take part in sporting events, Gaelic and soccer, basketball, athletics, etc.
Extra-curricular events include visits to plays, films, art exhibitions, visiting musicians and writers, school plays, debates, public speaking, quizzes, school choir, links with cross-border schools etc.
Gaeltacht scholarships are awarded to three first year students annually.
The code of discipline is based on merits and demerits, and Ballinode College is a bully-free zone.
INFORMATION FOR PARENTS OF NEW FIRST YEAR STUDENTS
Ballinode College is a co-educational college providing a comprehensive programme of education to Junior Certificate, Leaving Certificate and Post Leaving Certificate levels.
In May, short tests in English, Mathematics and General Knowledge will be held, in order to ascertain the ability levels and specific needs of each new first year student . These will be followed by activities in woodwork, home economics, art, science, computers and P.E.
During these activities, the students will meet their mentors-senior students who look after the new first years during their first few months in the school.
The core subjects for first years are as follows:
Irish English
Mathematics History
Geography Science
French CSPE
Physical Education Lifeskills
Computers Religion
Optional Subjects: During the first term, all students have a two month trial period of each of the following subjects
Home Economics Woodwork
Art Metalwork
Business Studies Technical Graphics
At the end of the first term the students choose three of these subjects, which they study for the Junior Certificate.
There will be an information evening held in mid September for parents of new first years when you will get an opportunity to meet all the teachers of first year classes.
