Fire Eaters!!

Fifth and Sixth Class are very busy at the moment reading David Almond's "The Fire Eaters". I will get the boys and girls to write up their book reviews shortly. The story is a summary of two months in a boy's life and his fears and worries about his sick dad, his new school and the looming war on account of the Cuban missile crisis. His friend Ailsa and his new acquaintance the escapologist Mac Nulty change and solve everything.

Very soon RTE radio one will be visiting the school to listen to the pupils' views on "The Fire Eaters".The discussion will then be broadcast on RATTLEBAG , RTE'S very famous arts programme. So at the moment the boys and girls are critically reviewing the book as well as drawing a few of their own illustrations.

The picture above is of the escapologist MacNulty who has a big part in the book and across is Bobby , the narrator and his big and bold friend Joseph Connor.
MacNulty liked to do tricks with flames , chains , skewers etc.
MacNulty could be found in the city of Newcastle entertaining the crowds and he had an able assistant in Bobby Burns.
The crowd were very unsure of MacNulty as he performed his tricks. They backed away as he beckoned them to him or to pay for his entertainment.
