History Of The Parish.

Ballinspittle is in De Courcey country, a rural area of undulating countryside near Kinsale.De Courcey country is wedged between the Atlantic Ocean and the River Bandon in the South West of County Cork.The parish takes its name from the Anglo-Norman De Courcey family.

The Old Head of Kinsale, from where a lot of our children would come to school from, is an area of beauty and indeed one of the leading golf courses in the world today.

Some interesting facts about the area: In 1833 Ballinspittle National School was built, it was the first national school in Ireland after Catholic Emancipation.It continued to be in use for 132 years unti it was replaced in 1965 by our own school.
In 1915 The Lusitania was torpedoed off the Old Head Of Kinsale with the loss of 1198 lives, resulting in the USA involvement in World War 1.
In 1971 Marathon Oil discovered gas off the Old Head Of Kinsale.
Native Finbar Wright becomes a professional tenor.
1997 20 million euro Old Head Golf Links opened.
