The photo shows the four pupils who represented their group at the Esso Schools Wildlife Challenge Final in Belfast in June 1999.  They are pictured at the display of their project and the set of their drama that they performed before the judges.  Irene O’ Loughlin (horse chestnut tree), Cathal Delehunty (pupil), Michael Kennedy (interviewer) and Edward Ryan (young sapling).  Their project was entitled ‘An Crann Feasa’ and it told the story of Ballycahill’s landscape in 1989, 1999 and how they perceived it would be in 2009, through the eyes of a tree.  The tree they chose to tell the story was a horse chestnut tree growing in the school grounds.  This special tree was grwon from a conker by the children of first class in 1984.  The whole project was of great educational value and included geography, research, recording, drafting a survey and recording its results, poetry, artwork, cartoons and maths.  The involvement and support of the community was most impressive.  All efforts were rewarded when they were presented with the first prize by Dr. Mo Mowlam at the Waterfront Hall, Belfast.
