The November Envelopes for the Holy Souls: If you haven’t returned your envelope yet, you may do so any time during the month of November.

St. Martin’s Day is on next Fri.11th Nov. and you are warmly invited to visit the Blessed Well in Ballynacally, particularly on that day and on Thurs., the eve of the feast day. The water from the well is reputed to have a cure for sore eyes and many minor ailments.

The well and shrine is located in the sort of seclusion that had an irresistible appeal for the Saint, in his lifetime. Even today, it is inspiring to see the constant stream of pilgrims make their way to the shrine, both old and young, all with a deep faith in the ability of the Saint to cure their ills.

*Candles: For those who wish to bring candles to the well, these can be bought locally.

St Martin of Tours (316-397)
St. Martin was born in Milan, Italy. He first came to France as a Roman soldier. He was converted and joined St Hilary, a monk at Poitiers. Later he founded a monastery at Liguge. He was made Bishop of Tours in 372 and worked for the spread of the Christian faith in Gaul. Tradition tells us that he once met a shivering beggar on his travels. He cut his cloak in two and gave half to the poor man. His kindness and compassion inspired many to follow his example. He became a conscientious objector to war. ‘I am a soldier of Christ’ he said, ‘it is not lawful for me to fight.’
St Martin is patron of France, of beggars and of soldiers.
He died in Candes, near Tours, on Nov. 8th 397. His tomb is famous through many miracles and attracts large numbers of visitors.

Sincere thanks to George and Frances O’Shea and all who help to keep the shrine in Ballynacally so well.

Running on Empty
Oil might strike a chord in us more today. It certainly hits the pocket more with soaring fuel prices probably here to stay.
Dads will relate how the ‘family car’ unerringly becomes ‘Dad’s car’ when the fuel tank is low. But it’s not only males who find themselves doing mental calculations on a journey with a winking fuel gauge looking accusingly out at them from the dashboard. It seems to say ‘Why were you in such a hurry that you neglected to fill up?’
Of course it would be different if we knew when things would happen. When a tank runs dry, a marriage falters, a job goes, a loved one falls ill, a person dies. But we don’t. We live in uncertain times. What’s required is a posture, a mentality, always pressing forward, always waiting, expecting something or someone. Being at your post – because, where else would you – should you be?
A lot like the bridesmaids that Jesus built his parable around, half of them were waiting expectantly and half of them were simply waiting. Half of them were ready for what was to come, whenever it might come and the other half were ready to get the party started. The difference between them was not that some were keeping watch all night long, pacing the floor and waiting for the groom to come. They all wound up going to sleep. The difference was that some were ready and some were not. It is not the looks, the lamps, or the long dresses that sets the wise apart from the foolish – it’s the readiness.’
