Freeman of Cork - May 1997

Following this rich tradition at a meeting of Cork County Borough Council held in the Council Chamber,
City Hall, Cork on Monday 11th November, 1996,

An tArd Mhéara Alderman James A. Corr proposed and it was unanimously agreed ....
"That the Freedom of the City of Cork be conferred on John Bermingham.

In appreciation of his remarkable contribution to the personal growth of persons with mild
and profound mental handicaps in the City and County of Cork.

As a founding member of the Cork Poliomyelitis After Care Association in 1957
he has been continuously involved in directing and expanding the role of that Association.

Today, known as COPE Foundation it provides a comprehensive service to 1,500 persons
from the City and County of Cork with mental handicap
and a lifetime commitment to the parents of such persons within its care.

The comprehensive nature of the services of COPE Foundation
is to be seen in its special schools such as Scoil Bernadette, Scoil Eanna and St. Paul's;
the special care unit for severe and profoundly mentally handicapped persons at St. Elizabeth's;
the sheltered workshops located in towns in the County of Cork
and the integrated housing schemes which at this time total 45 dwellings.

He has in the course of the past forty years devoted himself
to building up an organisation which is predominantly voluntary in its structure
and is committed to responding to the needs of special people in our society.

For these reasons and at a time when The COPE Foundation
is celebrating forty years of commitment to people,
The Lord Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors of the County Borough of Cork
consider John Bermingham worthy to be enrolled in the roll of its Honorary Freeman and so direct."

Tribute to Mr. John Bermingham RIP.,
Cllr. P.J.Hourican, Lord Mayor of Cork.
2000-2001
Press Release Dated 3rd November 2000.

John Bermingham served the people of Cork with distinction, firstly as founder of
Cork Polio and General After Care Association now known as COPE,
when he saw the need to look after people with disabilities following an outbreak of Polio in Cork in the late 1950s.

With his foresight and determination, he spearheaded and developed services for people with disabilities
in Cork and was involved in establishing the National Rehabilitation Board.

John Bermingham was a man who got things done,
and was determined that those who were unable to look after themselves due to disability
receive the highest standard of care.

As a public representative and Lord Mayor of Cork,
John Bermingham served with distinction and had a vision for the city he loved.

He will be remembered with affection by all who knew him and especially by his own family
and the families and friends of the disabled on whose behalf he was always fighting for the the best.

John was a family man and I extend deepest sympathy on my own behalf,
and on behalf of the people of Cork, to his wife and family, and especially to his son Brian -
Deputy Lord Mayor of Cork.

Dear Councillor Bermingham
As requested I have checked with the City Library for your fathers starting and finishing dates as a public representative.
The library have confirmed that it was 1955-1979. They also rang the Irish Examiner who agreed these dates.
Best Regards, Gillian O'Connor. Cork City Council.
