This is a picture of the Lynch Memorial Window. It is housed in the stone facade behind St. Nicholas' Church. On this very spot in 1493, James Lynch, mayor of Galway, condemned and hanged his son from the window for the murder of a Spanish youth. Lynch was unable to find anyone willing to hang his son, so his commitment to "stern and unbending" justice forced him to do the act himself.

And this is how the word "lynching" came into existence.
