Homework Policy
Scoil an Chroí Ró-Naofa has a strong tradition of homework as an
essential part of a good academic programme for the pupils. Studying at home is
seen as an integral part of the pupil's education to develop resourcefulness,
responsibility and achievement. It is primarily a reinforcement and extension of
school learning providing practice, integration and application to nurture
commendable study habits outside the classroom.
Parents can assist greatly in this process by encouraging a regular
homework routine, providing a quiet well-lit place for children to work. In order
to foster concentration, distractions such as television, stereos, computers etc.
should be avoided while homework is being completed. The development of literacy,
especially in younger classes, is seen as being extremely important,
and parents are encouraged to read with and to their children.
Parents should also ensure that homework is a priority and that
pupils involved in after-school and extra curricular activities have sufficient
time and concentration to complete properly assigned homework.
Homework is set by the class teacher and learning support teacher
and should be completed neatly and carefully to the best of the pupil's ability.
In more senior classes, long-term assignments or project work may be given form
time to time and should be planned over a period of time. Homework is not given on
long weekends or during holidays. The following time allocations are suggested as
an approximate guideline:
| Junior Infants | 15 - 20 minutes |
| Senior Infants | 20 - 25 minutes |
| First Class | 30 - 35 minutes |
| Second Class | 40 minutes |
| Third Class | 45 minutes |
| Fourth Class | 50 minutes |
| Fifth Class | 1 hour |
| Sixth Class | 1 hour 15 minutes |
It should be noted that these are suggested times only and
occasionally individual pupils may spend more or less time depending on
homework content.
If the assigned homework proved too difficult for a pupil on
an ongoing basis, the parent should discuss the matter with the class teacher.
If a child cannot complete homework for whatever reason, the
pupil should bring a note to the class teacher.
